chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ALCinject.kext

How do I use AppleHDA Patcher ?

  • First download a codec dump for your own sound card vendor and model
  • After having a codec dump, drag it into the AppleHDA Patcher
(the patcher will start after this, asking for your root password)

Don´t run the patcher, you always have to drag and drop the codec dump into the patcher icon. It cannot be running when you do that

Why does the Patcher say I have an unsupported codec when I know it´s supported ?

The reason is that the Patcher works with Plain Text and Unix Line Breaks formating.

(Rich Text Format and DOS Line Breaks are not interpreted by the patcher)

You can use, for ex. BBEdit to open and convert the dump to the right format.

Open the dump with BBEdit, choose File -> Save As - choose Options and select Unix as Line Breaks

How do I make a linux codec dump ? - By Metajames

OK, this is for everyone who is confused about how to get the linux codec dump. This is how I did it, you can do it other ways but basiclly you need to boot linux, cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 and save the output so you can feed it to the patcher on OSX.

I saved mine directly to a USB stick, make sure to make it writable by right clicking on it and selecting the option if you do that. I will describe a email method below since I think it is a bit more straightforward. If anyone has problems with these steps let me know and I can revise this post.

1) Download Knoppix Live CD Linux Distro

http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/KNO...07-01-04-EN.iso

2) Burn the Knoppix iso to a CD-R

3) Boot your Hackintosh from the Knoppix CD you just burned (press enter at the prompt to fully boot into gui)

4) Open a terminal session from the dock, the icon looks really similar to the OSX one, black screen with a ">"

5) Type in the following command

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 > ~/Desktop/codec_dump.txt

6) Now you have a file on your desktop called "codec_dump.txt"

7) Launch the web browser (Konqueror) and use web based email to email the file to yourself.

8) Reboot the computer and remove the Knoppix CD

9) Boot into OSX86 from your HDD

10) Download the appropriate patcher from post #1 of this thread

11) Download your codec_dump.txt from you email account

12) Drag and drop codec_dump.txt onto the patcher (Taruga frog icon) Turtle! Not a frog.

13) Follow patcher prompts and reboot

14) Post your results into the results thread (include your codec_dump.txt but please rename it to something appropriate ie, chipset and mobo make/model)

Hey everybody! It´s a Turtle, not a Frog. Don´t drag the codec dump into the Frog (the Frog might be evil :censored2:)

Look at my avatar... see ? It´s a turtle. Look at the full patcher pic:

in ubuntu edgy eft, it's codec#2. here's the codec dump for my audio controller onboard my intel dp35dp mobo: SigmaTel STAC9271D

sadly, it didn't work in my rig (i used the v1.20 patcher). what's more frustrating is it messed up w/ my network controller settings & lost my i-net connection.

hope u can help me out Taruga & hope further that u can point me to the right direction on how to make my onboard intel 82566dc-2 gigabit lan controller work in my osx86 leopard. tia.

Edited by Taruga
The Patcher has nothing to do with the network. To revert patcher changes, just delete ALCinject.kext and AppleHDA.kext.

I had some trouble with Knoppix in that it didn't present the codec file. I used an Ubuntu 7.10 live CD instead and that was fine.

And one for the hard of understanding, like myself - don't launch the app then drag the file to the icon in the dock, drag the codec file directly onto the application file.

Hi people. I'm new to this, so please excuse my lameless ;)

I tried the procedure, which seemed to work.

The head of my codec dump looks like this :

Codec: Realtek ALC861-VD

Address: 0

Vendor Id: 0x10ec0862

And here is the result of patching :

AppleHDA Patcher - 2006/2007 by Taruga v1.20

* Patching AppleHDA.kext to 0x10ec0862 Done

* Checking AppleHDA for patch Done

0001f4a0 cmpl $0x10ec0862,%eax

00020584 cmpl $0x10ec0862,%eax

* Checking for SPDIF Out Not Detected

* Checking for SPDIF In Not Detected

* Using the following nodes in pathmap

Speaker :

* Copying new config to destination Done

* Repairing Permissions Done

* Deleting Extensions Cache Done

** Done patching - You can reboot now **

Unfortunately, i have no sound, should it be right after patching or after reboot.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Not working yet with your codec, you´ll need to wait.

seens that knoppix didn't found my card on my HP 6710b. Command tells me, that there is no directory or file. checked it... There's only oss and seq folders + some files (card, devices, modules, etc.) :)

Any ideas?

Using Knoppix 5.1

I, I also have trouble with Knoppix and try to use Ubuntu 7.10 live cd.

What exactly did you type in the terminal to get the output? I keep getting an error 'No such

file or directory' which leaves the file codec_dump.txt on the Desktop but with nothing in it...

When comparing the output you got to the info in the Device Manager -> your audio device, which lines, if any, were similar?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

/Peter

I am having the same issue. My codec seemed to be codec97#0 when I tried a ls command, but my codec_dump.txt is still blank

  • 1 month later...

Hey guys, I was having the same problem with the Knoppix command, but this seemed to work for me:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0 > ~/Desktop/codec_dump.txt

This gave me a dump with lots of info in it, but I have not gone past this point yet, so I can't say if everything works for me after this step. Hope this helped someone at least.

EDIT: after all that it looks like my codec (ALC850) isn't even supported by the patcher. oh well.

I did a google search and found out the new iMac 24" uses ALC885 audio. Here is what I found. Asterisks denote different sections of the linux codec dump. I hope this helps anyone out there. I have a DFI Lanparty Dark P35-T2RS. If anyone has this board and gotten audio to work correctly, drop me a line.

Hello! First I want to say Taruga you are the greatest for creating all this and I will be glad to make a donation if I can get My laptop working. I am new to this forum and new to Mac. I have never used a Mac before but I have a Dell XPS M1530 which I installed Leopard on using iATKOS v1.0ir2 and now I am trying to get my sound working so I downloaded AppleHDA Patcher v1.17 and I also have the Linux Codec for my Sigmatel 9228. I have tried several times to get the patcher going but have not been able to get it working mostly because I am sure I am doing something wrong. It seems that all the instructions on how to use AppleHDA Patcher are more gearded to someone that is familiar on how Mac's work. Taruga I have tried to follow your instructions but I think there are other steps that I am missing for example you say in step one to copy files to /System/Library/Extensions but when I unzip the AppleHDA Patcher file I get the Icon on the desktop and when I open that there is a Contents folder with many other sub folders so i have no idea what files you are talking about. If there are more detailed instructions that would be very helpful. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
