Hey guys,

http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?so...earch&fgtp=

These babies look very inviting... at a few bucks each... but they have no brand on them and so I can't be sure if they will work on OSX or not. Apparently they plug and play on windows?

Anyone tried them out?

Also, I think the SMC 2209 USB/ETH adapter works (http://www.sustworks.com/site/news_usb_ethernet.html)

but does anyone know if the SMC 2208 USB/ETH adapter work on OSX?

Thanks!!

In Tiger I used the Sustworks kext with my Linksys USB to Ethernet adapter, on Leopard is not necesary anymore, Apple provides with AppleUSBEthernet kext

Chipsets inside this kext:

AX88178

AX88772

Devices:

ASIX Ax88772

Belkin F5D055

DUBE100

Linksys USB200M v2

Linksys USB1000

NetworkManager under gutsy detects a "Wired network (Unknown USB interface)".Windows XP detects a "DAVICOM INC." or something, and I installed the driver from the included CD. Then another "Local Area Connection" appeared.

I have yet to test actual link ability, no ethernet jacks in the cafeteria....and now back to dy/dx. Will post more after exam.

doesn't look good....their website gives Win9x/2k/XP drivers, and Linux 2.4 and 2.6 module code, as well as an EEPROM programming utility.http://www.davicom.com.tw/eng/download/Dri...driver_9601.htmlooks like we're going to need the driver to be ported to OSX.

Sidenote: Quick edit screws up line breaks

I already got myself a refurbished D-Link DUB-E100 for just over 10 bucks (including shipping with other things)

but I am still interested in finding out if this thing would work!

Thanks for updating and please let us know when you do some more testing (after calculus exam )

I have an SMC 2209 (SMC2209USB/ETH), and installed the AX8817x driver from SustWorks on my Leopard (10.5.1) Hackintosh to try it out. It failed, having a problem with IONetworkingFamily dependencies. So if you get one of these USB/Ethernet devices, I would recommend buying one with native support.

remove that driver because leopard already has AX8817x support in the IONetworking plugins, or remove the AppleUSBEthernet.kext to avoid conflicts, the sustworks page say it works with Leopard.

which one did you buy? I thought the small blue USB dongles says 10/100Mbps on them?

i bought a little blue one, shipped from hong kong. state.electronic was the seller i believe.

it is a 10/100 device as far as windows can see, the connection status window reports 100.0Mbps. however, running network benchmarks, I only managed to get a real-life transfer rate of ~6Mbps. My Realtek 8139 gives me a minimum of ~60Mbps. The link light on my switch is green (100Mbps) however. Also, in Device Manager, the devices is listed as connected to a standard USB controller, not a USB2 Enhanced controller.

Finally, under ubuntu, the device works fine, but after a while, the LED on my switch goes amber (10Mbps).

sent an e-mail to tech support, as expected, they say there's no plan for an OSX driver.

Dear Matthieu,

Actually, DAVICOM develops and sells DM9601 but we are not maker of USB to Ethernet adaptor. Officially released drivers are below. However, the MAC OS driver excluded. There's no plan to develop driver for MAC OS as well. We are sorry for inconvenience.

Best regards,

Technical Support

DAVICOM Semiconductor Inc.

I read somewhere that the DM9601 is "similar" to the Pegasus USB ethernet (which is supported on OSX)...

lol true... but considering I paid $10 for my D-Link DUB-E100 (a bit bulky...) , and I'm replacing it with another dongle I bought for $15, and the fact that I get the pleasure of running everything non-apple... I think I'll stick with kexts =P

in case anyone is too lazy to look, the Apple USB Ethernet adapter is $29 (which I find actually reasonable compared to the rest of the things apple sells). anyone know the chipset? (same as these ones?)

Hello.

Dell Inspiron 1420 with networking problems.

I have purchases a MB442Z/A Apple USB Enternet Adapter as my unboard unit just would not work.

I'm running iATKOS all pathed up. I updated with Kalyway 10.5.2 Update and all is going well.

This USB Ethernet adapter is recognized but it does not seem to work.

In System Profiler, under USB I see it listed as:

Apple USB Enternet Adapter:

Version: 0.0.1

BUS Power(mA): 500

Speed: Up to 480 MB/sec

Manufacturer: Apple Inc.

Proudct ID: 0x1402

This does not show up in System Preferences Networking.

When I plug the ethernet cable into the built in, non working adapter in the laptop, the switch lights up. The switch does nothing when I plug it into this USB adapter instead.

Do I need to do some configuration? I am a total OSX newb and from my poking around I can't find any equivalent of adding new hardware and letting the OS know it is for ethernet.

Can someone give me some pointers? I found this topic searching for AppleUSBEthernet.kext. Does it have something to do with my issue? Anything I can find on thsi adapter indicates that it should just work with 10.5.2 but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Can someone tell me how to go about what MacGirl has suggested?

I am trying to do all this from a Vista machine. Of course any updates that I can pull down on there I have no way of pulling stuff out now that my trial of Macdrive has expired.

Can someone get these updated 10.5.2 USBEthernet.kext files for me?
