ZeDz
I've a same problem in boot: -V "Failed to load nv30hal.... Still waiting for root device..." My HD MASTER(IDE1 PRIMARY), and DVD MASTER(IDE1 SECUNDARY). My motherboard is a ASUS P4S800-DX(Shipset SIS655FX). How i make to resolve this problem? Thanks! My config: Motherboard ASUS P4S800-DX (SIS655FX) Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0 GHZ Prescot (SSE2,SSE3...) 2X 512MB DDR SATA 120 GB Seagate DVD LG GSA-4163B NVIDIA Geforce 256MB FX 5200 128 Bits I had a similar problem, basically, in order for the os to recognize your root device (dvd-rom), you must connect it as the slave on the primary ide. This is kindof annoying, but that's the way to fix it. If you don't wanto do that, then u gotta use a firewire or usb dvd-rom...
bren
I made my dvd rom the slave on the primary ide, and made my hd the master on the primary as well. i'm still waiting for root device I've also tried it vice versa. and i've tried having the hd: master, primary and the dvd master on the secondary. none of these seem to work. because i'm still waiting for root device
mickoes
and you will always get it on a sis chipset, it's not supported at all *SIGHT* Any fixes yet?
WillyDavidK
Just to add on to this conversation, I'm currently trying to boot my maching with the same problem, here's my details... MSI K8n Neo2 Platinum mobo with Nvidia nForce 3 chipset (shouldn't be the prob) Ati-gecube Radeon 9550, reported to work fine in the wiki Athlon 64 3200+ Venice, also reported to work fine in the wiki I have 2 SATA hard drives, one contains only documents (no os) and the other contains windows. There is 10 gb at the end that I am trying to install to (I've done all the partition magic and diskpart stuff) The one with the os and space is on SATA1 I have a DVD-RW/CD-R combo drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, both IDE. The one that's NOT a dvd burner is Aopen and really crappy, and I've never been able to get any dvd to boot fromthis. It's normally set to master. The other is a sony drive and is wonderful, and I've tried booting from this. It's normally slave. Both are on IDE1 (there's no IDE0 on the board, just ide1 and ide2). I tried changing the dvd to primary and booting from it based on an earlier post, but with no luck. Anyone able to cast any new light on this? I'm using the Jas image of 10.4.6 EDIT: also, I'm using the following boot parameters: -v -x platform=X86PC
WillyDavidK
hahaha!! OK, I'm a bit excitednow, I've gotten past the error by pure luck, just hitting random settings. By this point I'd pretty much given up. Anyways, I got past it by hard setting my dvd drive to master (changing jumper), hooking the cable up as master, and disconnecting the other cd and hard drive. shimq1
Would the problem be fixed if no DVD drive is installed at all?
bubugugu
and you will always get it on a sis chipset, it's not supported at all in some previous discussions stated that the waiting for root device error is cause by unsupported SiS sATA controller, however i dont have sATA for my motherboard. I have swapped harddrives and dvd drives and changing jumper settings so many times and i eventually gave up. I really hope SiS chipsets will work someday. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=23566&hl=
.NetRolller 3D
I also have the same problem (SiS, too, mine is a 645DX), but for me, none of the drive configs work (I'm trying to install from DVD directly to the native hardware, without VMware). It is not SATA, as it has no SATA controller at all. DVD is an LG 4163B (probably that's not the problem since 4167B is reported to work). I'm trying to use the JaS 10.4.7 image, but then "Still waiting to root device". Is it possible that adding an IDE expansion card and attaching the drive to that will work? st0ne
Let me guess you probably have a board witth the ATI Southbridge. ATI xpress 200 chipset. I don't want to sound negative but you can give up if thats the case. No one on here has been able to make osx work with the ATI chipsets, Not even genious' on here. I guess it's just to hard to get it to work. Peace out, HooKed i just got 10.4.7 with exactly that chipset running. i have a RS482M4 - ILD (ati chipset with a xpress 200 graphics card, 1 x dvi and 1 x vga) and it definitivly works with JaS 10.4.7 DVD resolution 1024x768, no other setting possible, maybe with drivers? onboard network doesn't work but with a realtec pci gigabit card works firewire not yet tested azalia onboard sound dosn't work out of the box; maybe with drivers? regards
OPTiK
I don't think it matters that much if you have a SiS chipset or not. I get root device errors following Extension "com.apple.iokit.IOUsbMassStorageClass" Has no kernal dependancy, with an Intel chipset and JaS 10.4.8. Check my sig for hardware details. Any help would be great BTW.
Riccard
I have a Abit KN8 Ultra Motherboard (says on wiki it works with 10.4.8 (JaS) ) with both SATA on my HD and DVD-ROM. Does this mean that I'm screwed installing Mac OS X atm?
Sailfish
I just finished a project with an Intel 945GNTLKR board with a SATA HD and an IDE DVD and a dual core CPU. I found that setting the BIOS to Single Core only was the only way to get the isntallation to proceed. Then change back afterwards. Seems like the "root device" issue can be a multitude of things that only trial and error will overcome.

You have 4 SATA connectors on your MB, so , connect one of the harddrives to SATA-1 connector, after that connect LG GSA-H62N to SATA-2 connector, restart and log in to BIOS , then configure SATA to be in IDE mode. That shoud help .
mainetality
Asus P5b fully working osx Tiger or Leopard! no more waiting for root device! Hi guys im so excited i got my mac working! its been weeks and weeks trying to fix it, ja pain in the you know where flashing bioses trying diff bios settings everything out there but nothing worked! but there is so much to say i'm not gonna even start! This is my first time so i dont know this post stuff works pls bare with me. Specs: core2duo e6300 @ 3.12ghz Asus P5b standard (bios 1803) 8600gts 256mb 4gig ram 250gig, 250gig, 160gig all sata2 + 80gig ide asus sata dvdrw now i'm not gonna waste your time if you getting error "still waiting for root Device" do this. iam using Iatkos btw but that doesnt matter its a error with any osx dvd. 1.get osx dvd Leo or Tiger or whatever. 3. Sata dvdrw and plug it into sata (ahci) port 2. Thats the bottm left slot in your motherboard see you have 4 ports in your board normally. Top left =sata1 bottom left =sata2 top right =sata3 bottom right =sata4 4. 2. go into your bios and change all ide settings to ACHI whereever you see (there's two in mine) 5.restart and boot with your mac dvd your hard drive must be in top right (sata1 port) and your dvdrw must be in the port underneath that, bottom left (sata2 port) if its like that that means they are in one channel same as two ide drives in 1 ide cable if you know what i mean. now your mac will boot. i installed my mac in the ide but thats up to you. My Iatkos dosnt wanna boot after install witout the disk still in the dvdrw will post a fix soon as i find one. Everything works with my iatkos dvd ex drivers for my 8600gts i got those elsewhere let me know if you need the link. or search "NVInstallerV.41.pkg" later. DONNYTEN
Blacksheepx: Not an advanced OSX86 tech support specialist but: Maybe it has something to do with SATA, Something in your BIOS that needs switchin, or perhaps you could try installing from a different dvd rom drive. I got the error and switching drives got rid of it.

Mleo
I've a same problem in boot: -V "Failed to load nv30hal.... Still waiting for root device..." My HD MASTER(IDE1 PRIMARY), and DVD MASTER(IDE1 SECUNDARY). My motherboard is a ASUS P4S800-DX(Shipset SIS655FX). How i make to resolve this problem? Thanks! Ejemplo, con Tiger sobre disco duro interno(SATA O IDE) EL INSTALADOR SE QUEDABA EN STILL WAITING FOR………. Ponia los discos Regrabador y HD externos(mediante los adaptadores a USB) y la instalación era exitosa. Vale la pena probarlo todo, experimentar tiene como resultado que al final las cosas salen. Espero sirva de ayuda.
