raulb Posted October 12, 2007 Share Posted October 12, 2007 Hi after wasting tremendous amounts of time trying to get darwine working with opengl mainly because of too much misinformation around the net and forums (It doesn't work) I installed crossover and its fabulous. HL2, HL2 Episode one plays nearly as good as on XP (I'm not kidding, it does), Office 2003 works well and looks much better than a standard darwine install in terms of fonts. For those of who looking to run windows apps and games I suggest you go get crossover mac and not waste time with darwine until the opengl issue is resolved. Of course if you don't need GL then darwine works with apps like office 2003 just as well but the fonts look better in crossover. I really do feel this is a superior solution to running windows apps in OSX for performance and minimal load on your system as compared to full blown virtualization like Parallels/Fusion. Yet these solutions get most of the hype while something extraordinarily useful like crossover which is so much more efficient and could work for users who need some apps but not full blown virtualization. cyclonefr Posted October 12, 2007 Share Posted October 12, 2007 Tried Half Life Episode Two with 8800GTS and it's slow compared to Windows and you don't even have motion blur or HDR, so it sucks really... raulb Posted October 12, 2007 Author Share Posted October 12, 2007 Thats because crossover has no support for DX10, limited support for DX9, its works better in DX8.1. It will definitely not play as fast as XP, but you will admit the experience is very playable. Thats the compromise one has to make to play these games on OSX without actually booting in to XP. But the performance you will get from crossover will be heads and leaps over any virtualization solution like Fusion or Parallels. These take significant system resources just to run, imagine running a graphic intensive 3d game on top of that. I think that makes a big difference for the average user who may not be so technically inclined to fiddle with Wine. In OSX I feel users are just used to having things work effortlessly unlike Windows users who are known fiddlers and Crossover will be a big help for these folks. Though I do feel the interface can be spruced up and made more intuitive and user friendly. I hope the Crossover folks read this, just put yourself in the average mac users head and then design the interface, little things really on configuration and usage can make a huge difference and unlock the potential of Wine. raulb Posted October 15, 2007 Author Share Posted October 15, 2007 If you find performance in Crossover unacceptable you are unlikely to enjoy the experience in Fusion or Parallels.
