Allegedly, the CRIA has taken demonoid down, the site and tracker have been unresponsive for almost 24 hours.

The Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled everything after they received some serious legal threats.

Edit:

It seems the link is going on and off, so here is a screen shot just incase:

numberz,

Canadians can shut it down because the Demonoid servers are stationed in Canada (they were moved from New Zealand). Canada itself didn't shut it down. It pressured Demonoids ISP to close Demonoid. Didn't you read the article...

Oh, I get it. Demonoid's ISP shut them down. Why would Canada shut Demonoid down? No, I did not read the article. :P

Update:

As of Tuesday, 25th September 2007, Demonoid is down, with no prior warnings from any moderators of the site. Both the main torrent page and the forum (fora) are no longer accessible. It is still possible to ping and trace the IP address of the site and it locates itself as in Canada. As of 6:45pm EST on 9-25-07, SSH and SMTP services are no longer active.

Torrentfreak.com has since reported this is due to legal actions from the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) who ordered Demonoid's ISP to shut down the site. Update Sept 26 01:03 GMT - Demonoid not shut down, just an un-scheduled rebuild. (Posted to Demonoid IRC channel, and re-posted at zeropaid.com)

However, the current downtime of Demonoid has nothing to do with legal actions, but with hardware issues. The Demonoid team says they are currently replacing harddrives, and that it could take a few days before the site is back up.

The timeline given indicated that this is more than a regular hardware update. The downtime is probably caused by harddrive failure.

The official announcement in the Demonoid IRC channel is:

“Site offline for a few days while harddrives get replaced”

At this point it is still uncertain if any data is permanently lost or how long it will take to get things up and running. According to one of the admins It looks like the most recent data is lost for good. The good news is that there are backups, but these are a few days old.

Luckily the Demonoid trackers are not affected by the downtime. Demonoid is still one of the most used trackers, any downtime of the tracker will make thousands of torrents unusable in clients without DHT and multi-tracker support.

Update:

Demonoid placed this message on the frontpage:

We had a system problem which will force us to restore everything from backup. The disks are pretty much empty right now and until we are able to upload the backup and set up everything up, we have to close down.

There was absolutely no mention of the CRIA (or any other entity) applying pressure to shut down Demonoid in the Canadian Press. Surely, if CRIA was successful in this regard, they would be beating their chests, and shouting from the rooftops.

Perhaps this "maintainence" was unscheduled, hence the lack of warning. We should give the demon-mods a break. I bet they're busting their asses getting the site up and running.

Vive le Canada!

Well, it is not really trouble for The Pirate Bay. I mean, for once, the torrent distributor is actually suing another company. It will be very interesting to see how this turns out. You might even see something on the front page :thumbsup_anim:
