they are already out. check the apple store... Yeah i like the ipod touch, but whats the point to have an ipod if you don't have a click wheel, every time i want to skip a song i have to get it out of my pocket, they should have inserted the click wheel in the touch screen. I still don't know if i should wait for the touch or get the classic.

The iPod touch and its web browser reminds me a little of the psp and its wifi and browser setup.

In all actualiy, ill probably end up with the 16 gb touch, or il wait for the 32 gb touch. I alredy have some 10 or 11 gb of music, id hate to not ba able to carry it all with me. and all my scrubs episodes, eesh. its.. so... hard.

Is there any possibility to upgrade the old 5.5G interface to the new interface? PLZ Steve hast to update this!!! :(

Any intel on further proceedings?! ;)

I was thinking the same, it would probably be a really interesting and fun project. I've heard that the insides of the iPod 5.5G and the iPod classic are basically the same - anyone got a firmware dump of the classic's OS?

Since there's obviously people wanting it, here's a link to the iPod Classic firmware:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-3619.20070905.iNq3b/iPod_24.1.0.ipsw

It doesn't download for me in Safari, but curl -O works. But don't expect to be able to get this working on older machines - from what I can guess, this is an embedded version of OS X (as there are no portalplayer strings in the firmware and it's 90mb). Rename the .ipsw file to .zip and unzip it.

ha, well at last check it was around 12, now its about 14, but i still havent ripped all my cd's, and my technics sl-d2 needs a new pre-amp and sylus (already has an uber-expensive cart with a G engraved on it) before i can rip all those records i got for turning 16.

(i know, what a great way to celebrate your kids 16th birthday :P , give him a 30 year old turntable and a monster collection of records ...that i cant play :help: )

Well, I thought about this for a little while and came to the conclusion that there's a similar function in the touch: double-press the home button no matter where you are, and a list of onscreen controls come on. Knowing where they are will probably be as trivial as pressing the clickwheel after a week... those are my thoughts on it, anyway...

  • 1 month later...

{censored}, I'm going to try it. If it bricks, I'll send it off with my extended warranty to Best Buy.

Hell, they might even give me a new {censored} Classic just for trying. :P

Did Apple just throw user interface design into a water bucket?

The split UI on the new iPods are hideous. And that's for someone who loves the OS X, Touch/iPhone interfaces.

Heck, even the "hacked" 5.5G Classic firmware looks much better.

Sorry, but this gen seems to be quite weak and in terms of UI alone, I'd get another player from a competitor ("Zorro" :P) that looks gorgeous whatever way you spin it.
