I know this is really basic but I have to ask..Did you try restarting the Virtual Machine? I don't know whether this has anything to do with it but try disabling Floppy controllers, Serial ports, Parallel ports, etc. in the Virtual Machine BIOS. Also make sure you have the VM set to 1 virtual processor, not 2 and that the guest OS is set to FreeBSD, Darwin, or Windows NT (this makes lots of problems go away sometimes).
