Dementual
So, I've been a constant Windows supporter forever. I always haaated Mac for having an elitist fanbase (or so I thought), but then a friend of mine opened my eyes to look beyond the elitist fanboys and actually try the operating system. Well, I went and got VMWare and a copy of Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso to install my first virtual machine. All went well, I thought, until I decided to go post about it on a few forums. I opened up Safari and was hit with a "You aren't connected to the Internet" message. I tried the diagnostics tool that was provided, but it said that I don't have an active DSL connection or something, and that nothing else was working. So I decided to connect an ethernet cord to the computer. Nothing. I reboot the virtual machine with the ethernet cord in. Nothing. I reboot the actual laptop itself, nothing. A friend of mine told me that I needed to click the little Wifi button on the toolbar at the top. I told him it isn't there. He recommended I search this forum. I've been looking since around 4AM this morning (it's 4PM now) on and off to try to find the problem. I've run into a few stops left and right. Network Card: Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network AdapterNetwork Card: Marvell Yukon 88E8038 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller Sound Card: Microsoft High Definition Audio Device All taken from System Information on Windows Vista. For the Atheros card, I followed these directions: 1. Open system/library/extensions/IO80211Family.kext/plugins/airportatheros5424.kext/contents/info.plist2. Change the "IONameMatch" section to have the following: <array> <string>pci168c,1a</string> <string>pci168c,1A</string> <string>pci168c,001A</string> <string>pci168c,001a</string> </array> 3. Save and reboot the virtual machine. There were more steps in the tutorial, but they work using the Mac/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist file, which was to be created by the above modification, which wasn't. I didn't find any other help on the Atheros card. As far as the Yukon card goes, this is the best help I found: 1. Get the device id (4352) and vendor id (11ab)2. Open sudo nano /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleYukon.kext/Contents/Info.plist in the terminal. 3. Go and change <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x436211AB</string> into <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x435211AB</string> 4. Change the two inaccurate model numbers to <key>Yukon-88E8038</key> and <string>Yukon Gigabit Adapter 88E8038</string> 5. Save and exit the file. 6. Delete a couple of files sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions.mkext sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache 7. diskutil repairPermissions / 8. Reboot. This did nothing. As far as my sound problem is concerned, I haven't looked, but I doubt to find anything anyway, since the sound card is a Microsoft product. Please help in any way possible. It's taken me so long to get interested in Macintosh, and now that I finally am, I can't get it to work. Thanks in advance.
bemac
My Acer has the same networking. You may/will find that Acer is very troublesome to get working. The AR5007 is flat out not compatible. Acer also throws a curve ball when you insert another wireless card that is compatible ... in that during install they still don't work in OSX. They'll work in vista, not in OSX - yet. Several threads regarding the topic. Search AR5006 and AR5007 Regular ethernet. Difficulties for many systems. I'm on external USB now. Using JaS install as with uphuck I couldn't get a stable network preference window. Can't say about audio.
