This is very tricky, but I pretty much nailed the install yet still need to find many drivers. I will update this topic as more information progresses. The process listed can vary depending on the specs your laptop has. This could erase your hard drive and should only be done if you know what you are doing.

My laptop specs:

Inspiron 1420

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300

128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS

160GB SATA Hard Drive

Intel 4965AGN Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card

Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam

Broadcom Netlink fast 10/100 Network Card (59xx)

Sigmatel STAC9228 @ Intel 82801 HBM ICH8M

How to Install:

1. Get uphuck 10.4.9 v1.4i

2. Burn the image to an empty DVD recordable (+R or –R, no rewritable dvd!)

3. Create at least 6GB of unallocated space:

- Press the windows logo in the bottom left corner of you screen (assuming that you're using Windows Vista)

- Right click 'computer' and select 'manage'

- Select 'Disk Management' in the 'Computer Management' screen and notice 4 partitions (71mb, recovery of 10gb, os, and a 2.5gb)

-Delete the 2.5GB partition

NOTE: The 2.5GB partition is used by dell media direct. Vista only lets you have a max of 4 partitions on a single disk. therefore you have to delete the 2.5gb partition

- Extend the OS partition fully and you should now have a total of 3 partitions (71mb, recovery of 10gb, and an OS filling up the rest of the space in your hard drive)

- Select the OS partition

- Right click it and hit 'shrink volume", type in the amount of space to shrink (at least 6GB) and hit 'Shrink'.

4. Hit WINDOWS BUTTON + R and type 'diskpart' (without quotes)

5. Type in (press enter after you typed in a line):

list disk

select disk [the number of your disk, probably disk 0]

create partition primary id=af

list partition

select partition [the number of your new osx partition, probably partition 4]

active

6. As soon as the laptop boots, peek pressing F2 until the BIOS setup appears.

7. Under Onbaord Devices, go to flash cache module and turn it off

8. Also under Onbaoard Devices, go to SATA Operations and change the mode to ATA. http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071225rl0.jpg

NOTE: This could runin your Vista partition

9. Insert the boot disk, restart the computer, and press F12.

10. Select the CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive, press any key, see a white apple loading and appear at the main menu screen. http://img388.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0814071713qd8.jpg

11. Go to the Disk utility, erase the OSX Partition you had made on vista, and format it as MAC OSX (Journaled) http://img394.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0814071718ki0.jpg

12. Once the partitioned, close the disk utility and hit continue on the installation screen. http://img379.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0814071717zz5.jpg

13. Read the important information and hit continue. http://img394.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0814071721wu4.jpg

14. Select the OSX partition you recentley formatted and hit continue. http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071242cx9.jpg

15. Check the following http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071246ta2.jpg & http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071246apr5.jpg:

- v1.4i Main Syatem

- Drivers-> VGA-> nVidia -> nVidia mobility

- System -> AppleSMBIOS.kext netkas, SATA support, nForce4 SATA, USB Driver, Azalia Audio, Power Management bundle, Intel Speedstep, NTFS - 3G, IONetworkingFamily.kext

- Network -> IO80211Family.kext 10.4.5, Netowrk patch

- Applications

16. Restart your computer and check that osx is working

17. While in OSX, change your resolution by doing the following:

1) Go to your finder

2) Find com.apple.boot.plist in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

3) Right click and edit with texteditor

4) Add the Graphics mode line and the screen size line under the Boot graphics line and string line. The particular segment should look like this, with the 1280x800 being your desired screen size:

<key>Boot Graphics</key>

<string>Yes</string>

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1280x800x32</string>

5) Chnages will take effect next time you boot into osx

18. Insert your vista cd and restart

19. When restarting, keep hit F2 to enter your BIOS

20. Under Onbaoard Devices, go to SATA Operations and change the mode from ATA back to SATA. Then go to flash cache module and turn it on

21. Save and exit the bios then restart

22. Rapidly hit F12 untill the boot menu comes up. Select the CD Drive. http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071339yo1.jpg

23. Press any key to boot from CD. After cd loads, Hit next in the Install Windows screen http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071342rx8.jpg and then click on "Repair your computer" http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071342aav3.jpg

24. Hit next on the "System Recovery Options" screen http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071343cf8.jpg and then click on "Command Prompt" http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0819071343avk0.jpg

25. Here, type 'diskpart'.

Then type (press enter after you typed in a line): list disk

select disk [the number of your disk, probably disk 0]

list partition

select partition [the number of your windows partition, probably partition 3]

active (if this doesn't work, try 'set active' without quotes)

26. Now hit restart and boot into Vista

27. Turn off UAC by going to start -> control panel -> User accounts and family saftey -> User accounts -> click "Turn user accoint control on or off".

28. Uncheck the box that says "Use UAC to help protect your computer" then restart your computer

29. Copy chain0 to the root of the Vista partition (probably C:/) [Chain0 can be downloaded here]

30. Press WIN+R and type 'cmd'. And type:

bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Mac OS X" (just leave the {current} there and don't change it)

bcdedit /enum active

bcdedit /set [iD] PATH \chain0 (replace [iD] with you identifier: http://janschneiders.googlepages.com/idosx.gif)

31. Thats it. Now the last steps is to find drivers for audio and internet.

IF A DEVELOPER WOULD LIKE TO DEVELOP THESE DRIVERS, I WOULD NOT MIND DONATING TO THEIR EFFORTS.

couple of questions

- what screen rez ? 1280x800 or 1440x900, do you get 1024x768 only,

or does it work with bootplist edit ?

- can you watch youtube aka videos ? since no QE/QC quarz/opengl

- can you plug in an external monitor ? what screen res able to run ?

- booth cores working ?

- xbench results ?

- anything in bios you had to change ?

- can you burn a cd ?

- is the cpu fan always running under osx ?

- lid close, can you sleep / wake the laptop ?

for sound and wifi, would use a usb sound, and usb wifi ralink ( has mac drivers)

thanks, Rob

- The screen res can be cahnged to any specified screen size and will eventually post how to do it. mine is at 1280x800 because i didnt order the high-rez monitor from dell

- Quicktime videos do work. I have not found the right wireless card drivers or ethernet driver, and therefore have no way of testing youtube.

- Fresh off the install, plugging in a monitor did nothing

- osx recognizes 2 cores so i beleive this means its working

- have not yet run xbench test

- for bios, check the install. you need to change the hd mode untill osx is done installing

- have not yet burnt a cd, but the system recgonizes my dvd burner and in the system profiler, it says "Burn Support: Yes (unsupported)", so i dont really know what that means

-I dont really hear the cpu fan, so dont really know if its running or not. if its running, its very quiet

- closing the lid does nothing and the screen stays on

Hope this helps. If you have any solutions to the problems, please let me know and ill see if the fix works.

for sound and wifi, would use a usb sound, and usb wifi ralink ( has mac drivers)

What does this mean? If i install a usb sound driver it will work? If so where can i find these 2 drivers? Thanks!

which wireless card are u using?

my 10.4.9 recognizes my dell 1390 perfectly and even uses the bluetooth.

no sounds on the sigmatel 9205 audio though ;)

and i get the ubiquitous screen tearing (used boot plist hack for res change to 1440*900)

i run it on a Vostro 1700 ;)

using the usb sound on desktop, why bother with the trouble to make it work,...

the only thing, at shutdown, with power off, the speakers would hummm,

like to find one that does not do that,

for the laptop, sound does need to work,

but so does sleep, throttle, battery meter,...

takes the pain, from the initial start,...

lcd screen,... are you running 1280x800 ?

if quicktime is running,... looks like video decoding is done in cpu,..

Well, i would rather avoid adding usb devices for specific functions and would prefer if the hardware worked with drivers. How much do you think it would cost to pay a member to create drivers for these? My batter meter is also working, but i have yet to test the sleep

i am running 1280x800. Later today, i will try to play a large quicktime file and also test the dvd.

I also would like to say that i tried updating to 10.4.10 using pascalw but it gave me a panic.

I am in the process of obtaining ilife and will post results as soon as i have them.

I am in the process of loading up a Vostro 1500, which is the same machine. I will report on the hi-res screen (1650x1080 or whatever it is) and the Intel 4965 wireless once I have it in place.

My question here is: Once it is all installed, can the drive be brought back to ahci and the flash module turned back on?

I will update the other steps later, but the only reason you have change it to ata is to install osx. once thats done, you must switch it back so you can boot up vista and set up the dual partition. So yes, you can bring ahci back on and turn the flash modula on after youre done installing osx.

Vista? LOL! No way. My main system is Fedora 7 (or will be once I get all the drivers running properly). I wiped Vista the minute I booted the laptop.

:o

i was thinking of installing a third linux partitoin, but dont see what i would use that for and my hd is only 160.

Then again, i dont know much about linux at all.

Cyberslice,

Just curious if there were any details you left out? I have the exact same coumputer. Attempted to install multiple OSX distros (including Uphuck v1.4i r2) and always run into a kernel panic before I can even install. I have gone so far as to disable one core (still hangs) and all other possible culprits (wireless, ethertnet, SATA, flash etc) and am always stuck with an IOAPIC error. Is ther a specific version of uphuck 1.4 you used or anything else you neede to disable to achieve a seccessful install? Thanks.

Its pretty much as detailed as i can describe. you should try using uphuck 1.4i r3 because i have a feeling it will make a difference. i didnt have to disabele anything in the bios except changing the hd to ata mode and turning off the flash (as described in the steps). but i do know what you are talking about because i have made numerous attempts to update to 4.10 using both koolkal and pascalw but have failed with both of them.

So in my attempts to locate 1.4i r3, I have realized it's only being hosted at the 'usual place' - which I of course lack an invitation to... Cybeslice, did you dl the torrent from there or is there an alternate site from which to get it? Thanks
