First I would like to say I'm sorry for my English and perhaps also for posting this topic maybe not in the best suitable sub forum.

Here is the deal: my best friend is working in Siemens, somewhere in Germany, and next to his department is a Lab where they need a really fast computers for doing some researches. What they understand under "fast" is a PC with the newest quad-core AMD Barcelona CPU's. But what do they do with the old stuff? Do they sell it? Nooo, they just give it away to the workers in this Lab. So, here how this friend of mine gets a motherboard with 16 gigs of RAM and four dual-core AMD Operton CPU's. I'm sure the first though would be "WOW! WTF?".... well, if still not the case - he actualy payed almost a dime for it.

But the thing is that exactly month ago he made an upgrade to a very nice Intel Core 2 Duo with the right RAM, the right coolers and all the other stuff that was needed to over clock it up to 3GHz. A killing machine, I would say. "Vista runs like DOS 6.22", he said. :o

Now his thoughts: I'm selling my computer to buy me the ultimate video card and HDD for completing the whole system. Than I'll switch to my new multi core machine which (probably) will stay un-upgraded for the rest of my life.

What I think: Hummm, nope! Not the right thing to do! Sure the Operton's are fast, but only the idea that a certain operating system will recognize completely and correctly my whole system. As far as I know maybe the only solution is Windows 2003 Enterprise edition. I might be mistaken, not 100% sure about it. And then - which programs will manage to bring all the 4 CPUs running? Adobe Premiere won't even install on Windows 2003, not that he would know how to use it. I don't think he would like to install Mac OS X on it even just to give it a try and on the other hand I'm not sure if the OS X initialize the hardware properly. I'm even about to say that probably this new system will be slower than the Intel Core 2 Duo that he already has.

And now my question to you: what do you think about that deal? What would you do if you were him? :D

Well, installing winxp with a pair of patches will take you about 2 hours,,,,give it a try to windows xp, and other to 2003, there are several guides on the net to transforms the 2003 server in a "workstation" OS.

And maybe you can give a try to a linux distro, like suse or ubuntu, or even a BSD SO...i like this very much http://www.pcbsd.org/

so....here you have my little help,
