Samsung q1 Ultra UMPC OSx WORKING

22 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

hi guys ,just wanted to share my experiences with this tiny machine and osx

i succesfully installed OSX 10.4.6 on it, i tryed 10.4.8 but no luck,it stops in the beginning of the install DVD before the apple logo comes.

anyway 10.4.6 install flawesly, just remember to boot first time in safe mode and install the gma900 drivers that come on the installation dvd otherwise you will just load a garbaged screen

i noticed the touchscreen is a bit off and needs to be calibrated, any of you guys knows how to do so in OSX?

i will post more things as i go further .

I also have a Q1U and I've been looking at alternative operating systems. I like Vista well enough, but I'm getting bored and I need something new to play with. I've messed around with Ubuntu a little, but I would really like to try OSX on my Samsung.

I'm pretty new to the whole OSX86 scene, so if you have any helpful links (particularly in relation to the Q1U) I'd greatly appreciate it. If not, I'll just keep poking around the forum and hopefully figure this out. Thanks,

Brian

Leopard 10.5.5 on 600mhz A100 Q1 Ultra

Installed using Ideneb 1.3 and voodoo kernel using my laptop and external usb drive, as the Q1 is not up to the install from dvd.

Have finally got everything working QE, QGL, wifi, battery meter, audio and since I took this photo I have managed to get vodafone 3g working using a sierra wireless MC8775 .

Mickchip, which version of kernel did you use? my iDeneb install gives me god damn kernel panics arrrrgh

And of course it'd be best if you posted the selections u'v emade during install )

well, 1.3 iDeneb install wouldn't even boot on me - got the rolling wheel of death.

Tried two different iPc versions won't boot install environment either.

The only one that boots than installs is iDeneb 1.6 Lite - but the OS itself won't boot. I guess i'll go and try Kalyway now. Any other ideas or maybe anyone else is working on that?

btw, touchscreen works rightaway in the install environment.

Well, ok, this deserves a post.

After wasting a load of blanks, i had to admit the only one working for me was still iDeneb 1.6 (well, i never tried out a lot of different versions, yeah). After playing with the settings, i realized that the trouble with kp's was created with the help of integrated into distributive audio driver, So i didn't install that and all was fine.

Well, the 1024 600 required me to turn to SwitchResX, but still i got it running, QE CI with the help of GMA 950 laptop drivers (simple, not 27ae one). Sound is running with azalia package from http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...0&hl=azalia

Now i have to admit that sensor does require some calibration, i've seen this ecen on xp, but there is a calibration driver for it, too bad we won't be able to work this one up, ruines the whole perfection for me. Right click on hold works, though.

Ah, to get the mouse and keyboard (integrated) working you gotta use PS2 drivers.

Well, the performance is not too bad, could compare to early mini's.

However, due to the {censored} calibration of the sensor, i think i will have to forfeit the idea of running mac os x on q1 ultra as an os, but rather play with it maybe two hours tomorrow, and then hit the partition button.

I realise there aren't as many q1u users around here or anywhere at all, but if any1 hears about calibrating the sensor, could u please let me know?

alright, i now know for sure that what we have in q1 ultra is an eGalax touchscreen device. Hell, their own drivers only let u calibrate it, but they wouldn't work. what a fiasco. Looking into touch-base solution now.

Hooooray! Or not. Well, the working calibration driver is the one from touch-base.com. Well, to hell with all the rest, u might think, but it costs 214 USD for an end-user. I haven't even paid them just used the trial peace. And now I'm kinda struggling there, cause it's a 200 bucks purchase of something strictly just-for-fun. Hmm.

If you email them, they might be willing to offer a consumer version or discount, although I'd be surprised. Is there a preferences file that can be deleted to "extend" the driver tria, e.g. System/Library/Preferences? I'd like to try this out for a month or two but the trial seems a bit limited for the price.

trial is free, but it offers only 100 clicks. Well, at least these'd be more or less calibrated. After that you can only move the pointer but not click with it. I wrote them an email already, but they have this price posted on the website as their price for END USERS, which we all are.

Thanks. Sounds like we both like Tablet Macs, or want a good working one! Overall, would you recommend the Q1 if the driver wasn't so expensive?

Well it depends on what u want from the tablet. For me it's the size, shape and feel of q1 ultra that make it so attractive. For that I'm ready to deal with it's sluggish a110(the premium version was never available in Russia).

Now if you want to do something serious other than just browse the web and watch low-def video, than it's definitely not the one - I mean maybe 2 gigs of RAm will give it a boost, but still the mac os x doesn't really perform excellent, it's responsive, yes. Usable. But nothing else. The one and only OS that works flawlessly(well in terms of speed) and is not totally obsolete is windows xp.

Now if u (like me) want to browse the web having put the device on your belly and be able to click the links with your fingers only - than that's the one. If you want performance, speed, bigger screen or something else - look elsewhere.

Hi there !

I've got Q1 ultra too (A110,no finger print, no HSDPA). Used iDeneb 1.6 (10.5.8)

-kernel voodoo (9.5)

-Hdaudio voodoo (mic and stereo speaker fully works)

-ichX ide fix

-broadcom 440x lan driver

-ps/2 voodoo (built in jogmouse and keyboard)

-seat belt fix (..or panic mounting dmg)

-voodoo battery

-about video driver side iDeneb let my 3 choices

1)desktop gma950 (get fully functional 1024x600 and working second screen .. little artefact some times)

2)laptop gma950 (ok but @1024x768 need a fix to to 1024x768 and no second screen)

3)a special release with specific dev id D(don't remember id but never used cause is not my id)

Any time Systemprofiler read 64Mb instead 128Mb . . ??? ..

-wifi and bluetooth works out of the box

Now I'm looking for webcams, better touch calibration and screen dimmer (cause on battery it's very dark)

Anyway everything run like a charm ! I'm very happy !

Thx in advance

Any updates on this? I just got a Q1 ultra and wanted to start to install Leopard. In the moment, the screen issues prevent me from installing (btw. I noticed that the screen on window is also very dark)

I also would like to know if there is another solution for touchscreen calibration other than the Touchbase driver. It works OK, but it's too expensive for a experiment done just for fun.

For now, when I pass the 50-60 clicks mark, I'm using the stylus to point, and the physical mouse button for clicking. But it doesn't work when dragging scrollbars or icons.

Thanks in advance!
