It's hard to say. A well designed case will normally run quite a bit cooler when it is all sealed up (so it has complete control over airflow). But many cheap cases aren't really designed for optimal airflow anyway. The best way to test is to see what temperature sensors say when the case is open or closed.

It's NEVER a good idea to leave your hardware out. Dust and all this other {censored} is automatically attracted to it because of the electricity coming off of it.

the best way to "somehow stop" dust is to put your machine on something, above floor ...

because all dust is on the floor ...

All depends on the CFM of the table fan at that speed.

Although it may look weird, it CAN be more effective heat wise and dust wise over the standard setup the case as.

But like already mentioned, its hard to say as every system is different and placement of cables, cards, drives etc can change what may have been a decent case layout.

Edit: I had a motherboard that had dried cola all over many of the chips and the only way to keep it from overheating was to use a 12" floor fan. (Prior to cleaning it at least.)

The dust thing should be too much of an issue if you clean more often. You should probably go simply by the temperature difference.

bwhsh8r is right, the air in your home is filled with dust and a lot of other stuff (like dead skin cells ^_^ ).

If dust is only on the ground, how does it get there?
