I was right - Parallels 3 contains Wine code!

I posted a few days ago about finding Wine DLLs in Parallels 3 - Turns out I was right! Parallels 3 uses code from Wine without releasing the source of their modifications and without even crediting them until after they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

They've lost my business forever and I'm going to see about a refund. I refuse to support thieves.

They're not hiding it, in fact they list it on their website as a source, they're just stuck waiting for the usual slowness of their legal dept.. it's a bit {censored}, but hardly worth the fuss, provided they do release the code. If they don't they deserve to go out of business.. But don't hang them just because their lawyers are slow..

I think this is a storm in a teacup.. they're probably trying to figure out which bits of code qualify as derivative and therefore need releasing..

I know at one of my previous jobs, the salesmen were forever promising stuff the developers had no way to deliver.. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a case of the same.. the PR dept saying "2 days" whilst the rest of the company scrambles around trying to get the code ready to release.

your over reacting - you have to give them the chance to do right before you brand them as a thief

They didn't list it on their website when I was looking for it on release date - The software I wanted to use doesn't work in Wine and won't work any time soon, so if I had known P3 just used Wine's DLLs, I wouldn't have upgraded. They didn't say anything until people from Wine project called them out. In any event, they shouldn't be needing any time to become compliant with the LGPL - They should have been compliant from DAY ONE. No company is going to just look the other way on a license violation and give the violator time to come to compliance - They'll be shoving lawyers down your throat even prior to the launch. License violation is license violation, regardless of the license. Just because it's the LGPL doesn't mean you can violate the license and fix it later.

Sorry if I'm a bit polarized on this, but I'm a current coder on a GPL project and we've had two occasions of people taking our work, relabeling it as their own, and selling it on ebay. It sucks seeing someone rip off your work and sell it for $30 a pop.

Perhaps you should have done the 30-day trial instead of buying software without testing it... I know that I wouldn't personally purchase software unless I've tested it to verify that it will do what I need it to.

Wow, you are an asshat.

You hang out on a site whose sole purpose was once to crack operating system software and you badmouth a company for being a little slow to cough up code? So the moral of the story is don't ever use GPL'ed code cause those guys are all asshats?

Glad I don't support the WINE project. Too whiney.

I'm just being as ass this morning myself. Pay no mind.

I agree...Parallels 3 isn't even released yet, right? I mean, it's still in beta... Let's at least wait for the official release
No, 3.0 final is released. The beta is for a minor update (3.1 or something like that.)
