Kernel panic on a MacBook Pro

Getting a really strange and vaguely terrifying error on my macbook pro.

I was trying to upgrade from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10, and I called tech support because you were getting an unknown error. We tried doing an archive and install, but I apparently didn't have enough space on my hard drive to do that. At that point, the tech support person said, to get out of the CD boot, I was supposed to restart my computer, hold down the eject button, and then I would be taken to my login screen. I then got this message (of course by this point the tech support person was off the phone, and Apple support had left home for the day!):

Needless to say, I haven't the foggiest clue what to do with this. The boot disk is no longer in the computer. Can anyone help?

very same problem while upgrading from 10.4.8 to 10.4.10 on a MacBook

Only one remedy after testing a lot but you need another Mac (a working one)

Download MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10Intel.dmg on the working Mac

Put MacBook with KP in Target mode and link it with a firewire cable to the working Mac

Macintosh HD icon of the ill Macbook must appear on the working Mac desktop

Open MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10Intel.dmg from the working Mac then upgrade Macintosh HD MacBook with KP

Once it is done, eject the upgraded Macintosh HD, shutdown and restart the MacBook

It has succeed here hope it will for you

I had a very similar problem. However, the panic "unable to find driver for this platform ACPI" occurred after a complete install of OS X.

I tried a few things, in combination, but I believe the problem was fixed by a PMU reset. I had also attempted a PRAM and NVRAM reset but don't know if I was successful with these resets due to the panic problem. Since the ACPI software has to do with power management it would make sense that the PMU reset did the trick.

I have read the many postings about a panic occuring within the airport software. However, that panic was not the ACPI related one that you mention.

Please let us know how you resolve your problem.

I'm experiencing the same problem.

I just installed a replacement hard drive into my Macbook, then installed OS 10.4.9. Following the first update (which was a lot of stuff), I received the same error:

Unable to find driver for this platform "ACPI".

My Darwin version is 8.9.3

I've tried repairing RAID, which showed that nothing was wrong there. I also tried to install the MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10Intel.dmg through disk mode, but was told that it could not be installed on my drive.

I looked into performing a PMU reset as recommended above, but found that PMU only exists on Powerbooks and Macbooks.

That's the state of things.
