uTorrent is coming to OS X

efi, whyd you ditch azureus?

For me, it was simply not as fast as uTorrent was/is. I've used Azureus under both OS X and Windows...and it still leaves behind a heavy footprint regardless of the OS. Another reason is the vast amount of options which IMO are totally negligible in the sense that they are only for the advanced...advanced...advanced user. For the common torrenter (for a lack of a better word, lol)...the options are quite simply overkill and could (as was in my case) actually hinder the performance rather than help you optimize your connection if you are not thorough enough.

Plus; and I know this is an improper configuration,....but uTorrent is much more responsive than Azureus when portforwarding is disabled for the application. When I first started torrenting...I did not know about port forwarding...and the first torrent app that I used was the original Bit Torrent app under Windows...which to be honest...was {censored} from every angle. Then I went to Azureus, and it was a definate improvement, however my memory usage spiked up crazy every time I launched the app, yet I could not justify the performance increase. With port forwarding disabled...I used to get around 1-30kbsp under Azureus. Then I learnt about portforwarding...and set up a private forwarded port just for the app...and my average speed now was in the range of 80kbsp-150kbsp.

Then I heard about the light...like literally under 5MB light footprint of uTorrent....and decided to give it a try, and low and behold, with my portforwarding not configured for uTorrent...I was already getting 60-100kbsp....and when I linked the forwarded port from Azureus to uTorrent....I was getting speeds in the range of 200-350kbsp...which is awesome, and much faster than Azureus.

That was the last time I ever used Azureus. Under OS X however...I've tried out several clients...from Transmission to Bits on Wheels...and I found that Transmission was the closest in terms of light footprint, and speeds as to uTorrent...though there is still a big difference...this was as close it got for me from using uTorrent...albeit under Windows.

Now that I know that uTorrent is being tested for use under OS X...I'm really happy, and that is now one more reason why I dont have to use Windows.

Everything you said in your post is pretty much the exact same for me! I've always been in a bit of tough spot because my PC is well, a normal tower. Its not loud, but its definitely not quiet. It also heats up my room. So when I need to leave a computer on overnight for a download, I use the Mac mini because it doesnt get hot and is so silent. I use transmission, but was always hoping a better client, like uTorrent would come to OS X.

Exactly.

My windows box is not by any means slow either...infact its still powerful compared to even modern standards (and I built this in mid 04'), however when an app uses more memory and processor than its actually worth in terms of its performance...something is wrong. In the case of Azureus...its becuase of the fact that its built on Java...which is slow as molasses regardless of the platform...from cell phones to personal computers.

Transmission is not slow either...as I mentioned, IMO its probably the closest you can get to uTorrent on a Mac. If I have time to kill (i.e Saturday), I usually get a few newely relesed movie torrents from the usual sites, and load them in Transmission. On average I load about 5-6, and each of them are about 700MB on average and the max size usually is 900 (from a really good uploader, I dont want to mention the name here, but you'll know the name if you use the Bay). I load them friday night on my Macbook Pro, and on saturday morning...they will all be finished downloading. From there its VLC player all the way, lol. However thats only if I have free time...some times I just download movies for watching later...

This isnt related to the thread but....

How to crash Windows Vista in 10 seconds: Hold down the Windows key and the letter "E" for 10 seconds or so. After opening up Windows Explorer windows ads, your system will freeze and crash.

I did this, I held down Winkey+E and slowly counted to 10. At first I got a lot of Windows full of white, then I got a tonnn full of black with the title "Windows Explorer (Not Responding)" then I got some sort of error message but I couldnt read it because it was getting covered in Windows frames (the contents of each Window were now invisible) Then I got a weird almost all white screen showing some message about their not being enough memory. All kinds of white and black squares flashed everywhere on the screen, constanly overlapping each other. Then I get a dialogue box "Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working" Next second, Im back where I started but with no Aero. :thumbsup_anim: This could be fixed so easily MS! Maybe limit it to 3 explorer Windows (3 as the limit for pressing win+E)? Hmmm?? Hmmmm?

If this had happened sooner I might have been happier, but since the last few SVN versions of Transmission added Selective Downloading support, its not such a big deal for me and Azureus was ditched also.

I'm interested to see if the reported download speeds are as fast as some people indicate compared to the other clients.

Edit: Added bold type since people still don't know as evidenced by next few posts!

How?

Hehehe, I walked into staples the other day and did this to 5 PCs...

w00t! Now you can have details of all the naughty things you've downloaded reported to PeerFactor (and hence the RIAA/MPAA/Whomever) on Mac OS too. Yay!

Edit: I'd just like to add that this is a somewhat sarcastic comment on uTorrent's author's relationship with PeerFactor SARL, an company specialising in DRM and anti-piracy solutions. There is absolutely no evidence that uTorrent itself is in any way 'crooked'.

he speaks the truth... :)

At the time there was some speculation that μTorrent may have been modified to spy on users on Peerfactor's behalf [11] [12], however to date (even following μTorrent's acquisition by BitTorrent, Inc.) no evidence has been produced to support these allegations.

I feel a bit suspicious of the link between utorrent and BitTorrent Inc. I'll be steering clear until it's proven that nothing untoward is occurring.

Actually because of this thread I tried Transmission again after 18 months on Azureus. Azureus has gotten a bit bloated and the new v3 puts me right off. I'm pleased to say Transmission looks good so far and is downloading faster than Azureus was. Plus it's native Cocoa rather than Java so loads quickly and doesn't eat more CPU cycles than it should do.

I hate uTorrent. I prefer Azureus (already for mac) or Transmission (only for mac).

Word. I've always experienced rather shabby download speeds with uTorrent. I use Azureus.

hmmm, now i'm having second thoughts of using utorrent again :D i also used BitComet in Windows before i started using uTorrent buy i don't think there's any BitComet version for the Mac :P so i guess i'm just gonna try the SVN version of Transmission w/ selective downloading option.

anyways still a great news :P
