Bricked iPod - any ideas?

So, I've got a 4G iPod that I absolutely love, but after disconnecting it the other day from my PC, it died. Now, when I can get it on, all I see is the little file icon with the exclamation mark.

I've done quite a bit of searching, but I wondered if anyone here had the problems and how they got it fixed.

I know I can send it in, but I'd really prefer not to, even if I have to lose all my songs to fix it on my own.

TIA

have tried running the ipod updater. if yes try this full reformat ur drive to FAT32 then try running it. Also goto into diagnostic mode and run a HDD check on it. Search on google for detailed instructions

have you tried the internal diagnostic program? most of them you enter by resetting the ipod and when the apple logo appears you press the center button the the left button at the same time. the apple logo should flip horozontally and enter diag mode, from there you can run hdd scans, memory tests...etc.

on another note my sisters ipod came up with a folder error and i couldnt get the ipod updater to recognize the ipod so i opened it, disconnected and reconnected the hdd, then reset the unit and it worked.
