Ranger
So, I've got a 4G iPod that I absolutely love, but after disconnecting it the other day from my PC, it died. Now, when I can get it on, all I see is the little file icon with the exclamation mark. I've done quite a bit of searching, but I wondered if anyone here had the problems and how they got it fixed. I know I can send it in, but I'd really prefer not to, even if I have to lose all my songs to fix it on my own. TIA
niteice
Was it a 40GB? I had the same issue - it was the hard drive. Turn it on and hold it right next to your ear - is there a lot of clicking, trying to read the drive?
Ranger
Yup, it's a 40 gig and it does a lot of clicking.
Ranger
Yup, I've tried to reset it several times and tried to use my Mac to reformat it (it's FAT32), but no dice.

Ranger
Interesting! Did you try to hook up the hard drive externally, reformat, and then reset for ipod use?
niteice
I just sent mine back to Apple, it was under warranty, they couldn't fix it, so they just shipped me a replacement.
U.C.
have tried running the ipod updater. if yes try this full reformat ur drive to FAT32 then try running it. Also goto into diagnostic mode and run a HDD check on it. Search on google for detailed instructions
niteice
That's not gonna help one bit if the hardware is physically dead.
Fossie
Does the iPod updater actually see the iPod? and have you tryed disk mode, on restart press the middle button and rewind at the same time, plug it in and select disk mode.

Javelin3o4
have you tried the internal diagnostic program? most of them you enter by resetting the ipod and when the apple logo appears you press the center button the the left button at the same time. the apple logo should flip horozontally and enter diag mode, from there you can run hdd scans, memory tests...etc. on another note my sisters ipod came up with a folder error and i couldnt get the ipod updater to recognize the ipod so i opened it, disconnected and reconnected the hdd, then reset the unit and it worked.
