Getting Safari 3 to run on 10.4.8 systems

Since Safari 3 is only for 10.4.9 or 10.4.10, most people can't install it because they use 10.4.8. I made a slight change to the installation package to allow it to install on 10.4.8 systems.

Safari 3.0 for 10.4.8

This is a standalone package, you just download and run it. Now your HDD with 10.4.8 will be selectable during the installation. I hope this helps some people.

The OS X version is almost exactly the same except for a few tweaks (notifications, the the "find" bar). I really wanted a new theme though. The brushed metal theme is so....heavy...

So essence all you guys want is a "new" theme NOT better functionality (although the latter is questionable with the current crop of "new-"releases)?

I like the brushed metal theme. It fits very well with OSX look and feel. In fact Besides RISCOS and certain linux desktopmanagers (Enlightenment comes to mind), OSX is the only mainstraem OS with a textured GUI. Why reverting back to dull gray (albeit gradient). What's so cool about that. You'll get sick of it after a week. And you just want it now because its "new".

Oh Dear. No wonder there's so much trouble with OSX.

BTW. Is there a way it let Safari3 beta run on other 10.4-versions as well. So that we with P4 and Intel 915 equipped mainboard (yes, the old developper machine-clones) can play as well?

At least thanks for the effort to let it run on 10.4.8 (which isn't so much different from 10.4.9 anyway)

Cheers

The package works well, I've been able to install it on my X.4.8 but I had been told that the genuine dmg has an uninstall script. Not here with this package and as my favorite plug-in (PithHelmet) doesnt work, I can't go back to Safari 2 :/

So it looks like 'Ramm' has been banned.

Does anyone know how to remove the version checking from an installation package?

I'd like to install the aluminum keyboard driver v1.2 on my 10.4.8 JaS hack but it requires 10.4.10.

Ciao,

it's more easy than you think. Until this morning I never did it (i'am on Mac only since 2 months), but I wanted install the new beta of Safari 3 so I gave a look around and discovered that it is the dist file inside the package witch has the version info inside.

Download the driver, copy to desktop, open the package then open the dist file (copy also to desktop and open with textedit), in this case it's aplekeyboardsoftware.dist, scroll down until you see this lines

if (!plist || system.compareVersions(plist.ProductVersion, "10.4.10") < 0) {

my.result.message = system.localizedStringWithFormat('systemTooOld');

my.result.type = 'Fatal';

return false;

change the product version to the one you desire, save, put the dist file back to the package an install....

I did it with safari 3 beta 3 and Quicktime 7.02 and works perfect. I was able to install also the keyboard driver, but i don’t have one so i don’t know how it works. The install anyway worked.

Don’t forget to repair permission

Ciao

:)

Why bother with Safari 3? I'm running Safari 4.1 on my 10.4.8 Hackintosh and much prefer it. All I had to do to install it was spoof the OS version number using the "JSN1 System Version Changer" - setting it to 10.4.11, and then run Software Update. I let it go through multiple iterations, and I think it installed v.3 before it went ahead to 4.1. I also picked up iTunes and Quicktime this way. So happy it didn't brick my system.

If I could just get iSync 2.4 to work, I'd be happy.
