WTF is up with the personal attacks?

The last two threads I perused on here BOTH featured personal attacks.

Nobody on here deserves to be derided/mocked for any reason and there is no reason for any kind of hostility on an INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD. It only makes for a bad community and it keeps new people from speaking up.

What are you talking about you idiot, you always make stupid posts just to get your post number up. What personal attacks?

I've notcied that users are flaming the new admins, and i think that is just lame. Whenever the new admins make a news post, you get tons of users flaming them and the post.

Thats what it seems like to me anyway

A Nonny Moose, I've noticed that you've been reporting alot lately about personal attacks. Feel free to PM me or any of the other admins or mods if you have something in mind that you think could be done to help stop this.

While normally I would comply and PM, I think this is something we all need to discuss in the open, so I apologize if this sounds like a {censored}-fest or if I overstep my boundaries.

I wish I knew of a way to help curb this problem. The rules here are fairly lenient in comparison to other boards (five strikes as opposed to one or two). I know everyone has a bad day sometimes, but I tend to believe that five strikes are a little excessive--maybe three would be more of an ideal number. Posters might even be able to be put on "probation" for a while where every post they make has to be approved (although this sounds rather 1984-ish to me).

I guess we need more people on the boards willing to report the attacks instead of just attacking back also. The thing I usually see on message boards is someone starts the war and then the person attacked just starts attacking back (and I'm guilty of this little thing too). We could do a special notice (can this be done using the BBS system?) to everyone reminding them that reporting is always the best way to go instead of fighting.

Also, I think it's time we seriously consider banning some of the more...eccentric posters that seem to be in the middle of all the flame wars. I mean, I've reported one certain poster at least four times (possibly more) and yet this person continues to post on here and engage in personal attacks. While these "eccentric" posters might contribute information, they don't exactly do it without calling someone an idiot, which automatically invalidates anything they have to say.

okay - the symbol is called a souastika - it is the buddhist symbold for peace - and budhism orginated in india so i guess you could say it is indian -- the swastika on the other hand is the buddhist symbol for war which was adopted by the nazi's

Whilst personal attacks are not tolerated by this forum, people seem to have very different ideas of what constitutes an attack. We have moderators carefully chosen and regulated through a system of peer review, and we are constantly considering what is and is not acceptable. I'm sorry, A Nonny Moose, but much of what you report is not of a character that we would call an attack, and by constantly "crying wolf" you are actually devaluing the significance of your reports.

Replying to someone in a post, disagreeing, as long as it is to the point, is all part of free and vigorous debate, which we consider healthy.

Having said all this, please remember that we who deal with these things are human, and merely humble volunteers giving our time & effort for no reward.

For an "attack" to merit moderation it has to be sufficiently directed and abusive, unwarranted, and not contribiting to the debate at hand. Additionally, it has to come to our attention, which is why the report system exists. Even then, it is not always easy to draw the line between what is acceptable argumentation and what is abuse.

I hope we are doing a good and balanced job. Over-moderation leads to accusations of censorship. Under-moderation leads to complaints of abuse & flaming. In short we will always be on the receiving end of criticism, but I feel as we are at present, we have it about right.

If I think something is objectionable, I will report it. And just because the mods don't think the same thing doesn't make that report any less credible. This is a horrible attitude to have as a mod.

when a debate is started, with each having their own freedom to express their opinions and since it's also down to where each individual stands to view the topic of debate, A Nonny Moose, don't take it too seriously. =) sometimes it would also be a great learning experience too. =)

I'm a believer in free speech, even though some people are inevitably going to feel offended by the views of others. I'll admit to being thrown sometimes by what appears to be a personal attack but I rarely respond - one thing I've learned over the years is to keep fingers off keyboard when you're in any sort of emotional state. The next day things often drop into perspective. I was once described in this forum as a "prissy {censored}", but hey, I'm still alive and I'm still here. I guess more people think I'm OK than subscribe to that poster's view so I decided to live with it and continue doing my best to help and enjoy the community.

You're quite right, we are much more lenient here than some boards. Try Doom9, for example - a great site and I respect the mods there - but even straying off topic will earn you a strike and I think that's going too far.

We do have some jerks here and I think there's a lot of teenage testosterone spiking the air sometimes. We know who the jerks are and we tend to deal with them behind the scenes, quietly. But overall, it's a good place and tolerance is the order of the day.

When things get heated, I like to remember the following lines from a song by VNV Nation:

At the end of days, at the end of time

When the Sun burns out will any of this matter?

Who will be there to remember who we were?

Who will be there to know that any of this had meaning for us?

And in retrospect I'll say we've done no wrong

Who are we to judge what's right and what has purpose for us?

With designs upon ourselves to do no wrong

Running wild unaware of what might come of us

I'm not too fond of cliché but this does rather sum things up, don't you agree?

Peace, guys.

-Sarah

Suasti is sanskrit meaning to be good, well, peaceful. It is the same form used in the transliteration swasti. tha ka changes the meaning to a 'little' thing. The symbol is found used in all south asian religions, including hinduism and buddhism.

That goes too far and it shouldn't be tolerated, no way.

A bit too much, IMO. There are people who regularly call others, either directly or indirectly, all sort of names: liars, idiots, either stupid teenagers or senile, while having no idea of the actual age of their counterpart...

There is no respect for rank either, and that is very odd,or at least contrary to the most basic netiquette.

Owell, that's how it goes. we are living in a virtual world, in which we do not know the true identity of each other, so no matter how badly you insult the other party, you are somewhat protected. you don't often see such incidents happening in real life though. =X

Ok that's either me or Kiko, or me and Kiko, Ban kiko, ban Kiko! just look at his first post here. The boy can't help himself. I on the other hand will learn to be nice :thumbsup_anim:

If I have offended anyone let me know and I will add you to my will Friends list.

But yeah we need to have a notification system where maybe we all discuss or even vote (which may or may not work out). But I just want to say that if this voting system does come into place I lend the idea to you all on the condition that I am immune to it's powers. You can't touch me.
