Improving Nvidia Graphics Performance

I have an XFX Nvidia GeForce 7800gt 256mb PCI-Express.

I installed the Natit 1.0 package for NVIDIA.

However, my screen savers still run slowly and choppy. I can play back movie files, but they look better/smoother in windows. I have a feeling that the graphics driver isn't quite where it should be... This of concern to me because I would like to use the system for Final Cut Pro and video editing.

Is there anyway to improve the performance from this point? Any other mods, drivers, fixes, anything? I am new to this so not sure what else there is to. Or this just a matter of waiting for driver updates? Do other cards work better than my XFX card? I thought I read somewhere that people had tried some other mods/ads/fixes.

Well if there is anything I can do to get better performance, I would appreciate it!!

(PS what is Quartz Extreme, and how do I tell if it is enabled or not?)

Applications > Utilities > System Profiler

You can check if QE/CI enabled through Graphics/Display pane..

im using 7600GT but was brutally killed by my On-Board GMA950 on OpenGL xbench test..

i think Nvidia drivers are not that optimize on OSX.

Thanks for the QE info. Sorry for clarification I did a search on QE, but thats not my main concnern...

Oh wait... I never installed NVIDIA drivers, I'm guessing that would help...

Anything else?

Hmm, never mind... looks like that dloads through apple and the drivers to use are just the Natit ones I have.

Can someone verfiy if there is anything else to do to improve performance? Or does performance improvement simply come from finding a way to get Quartz Extreme & Core Image running (I am guessing CI = Core Image? When people say QE/CI?).

Thanks so much!

CI needs access to pixelshaders on the graphicscard, and that ofcourse needs OpenGL and Quartz Extreme active.... which ofcourse is 100% dependent on working graphicssubsystem and drivers. Check your kext-files and make sure everything loads as it should. And also, Natit can be quite pain in the as on certain motherboard, graphics-combinations and graphicscardbioses.

Thanks Pitr, I appreciate it.

- You said "Check your kext-files and make sure everything loads as it should"... how do I do that?

- is there any place to find out info on what works best with what in regards to Natit? Should it be a pain with the following config that I have:

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (socket 939, nforce4)

AMD x2 4800+ s939, sse9

XFX Nvidia GeForce 7800GT 256mb PCI-Express

I also have another thread dealing with trying to get QE/CI setup:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=50230&hl=

I know this topic is so overdone and probably annoying by now, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time in even reading this!

Not to confuse the issue but I recall reading somewhere on the forums here that certain GT type nvidias cause more trouble than the GS ones. Now since I'm far from being a tech expert I don't have the slightest clue what makes the difference but I'm reading up a lot at the moment cos I'm also considering getting a 7600 or 7900 for 3d animation design. I now tend more towards a 7900GS.

The wiki is somewhat inconsistent with the issues people discuss on the forums and I generally see more posts about GT cards giving grief.

Tech heads, please correct me if I talk rubbish... :thumbsdown_anim:

GT or GS doesnt matter, what does matter is if the card has more than 256M or if the card's device ID is not in your geforce.kext plist. other things that can affect geforce cards from working is if you have a nforce motherboard chipset set, you will need to again edit your geforce.kext plist and remove all device ids (usually a range) and only specify your video cards.

How come both nv30hal and nv40hal seems to be loaded? Do you have identifier-strings for your card on both of these? Only one hal should be active....

yeah, you should only have 1 loaded. if you dont want to mess around with plists you could just move one of them out to your desktop or a backup folder, try removing the nv30hal.

Have 7300GT, which worked out of the box with Titan. Do I really need to remove all other IDs from the kexts?

Thanks

Ok... so I have a very similar problem and I was hoping someone could send me in the right direction. I'm am trying to get QE/CI working and am running into a couple road blocks.

According to the OSX86 wiki if I install Titan QE/CI should have complete support, so I installed Titan according to the wiki's instructions. When I checked the System profiler QE/CI is listed as "not support" under the monitor's section of the Graphics/Displays pane... I don't understand what my monitor has to do with QE/CI being supported?

Also, after reading through the rest of the thread and checking which kexts were loaded through the terminal. I have NV40 loaded and no Geforce kexts are loaded. My guess is that is because when I first installed I didn't have any gfx at all and looked through the forum on a different box and found that if on boot, after a successful install, I have no video I should remove all of the Geforce kexts from the extensions folder... so I did and my video works. I'm guessing that might be a problem for QE/CI but how do I get around the no video at all if I put them back??

Thanks!

*bump*

After a bunch more playing around and websearching I ended up putting the Geforce.kext file back into the extensions directory. I found a website about putting my device ID into the Info.plist file so the IOPCIMatch key looks like this:

<string>0x0221&0x0000ffff</string>

It also had me edit the IOPCIMatch key in NVDANV40Hal.kext and NVDAResman.kext.

Then I reinstalled the kext files (chmod/chown) and rebooted. I am now able to boot the system with the Geforce.kext in the extensions directory and dont get any errors upon boot, however upong checking what loaded via kextstat the GeForce kext still isn't loading and I still don't have QE/CI.

Is there anyone who has any sort of an idea how to fix this?
