I was drunk and poured champagne over my MacBook. What now?!

Ok, here is what happened... I have a girlfriend and I was cheating on her with another beatiful girl, thing is I was very very drunk. I had the music playing over iTunes and before I knew we were kissing, which is not bad. But by accident I smashed a glass of champagne over the macbook. It was on, playing music. But I was taking her back to my room so I didn't even realise what had just happened or didn't care much. I woke up at around 12 and she had already left. I had a beer for breakfast and went to turn the music on. That's when I saw my macbook covered in champagne, and I was pissed of! The fricking thing doesn't even turn on, the battery charges normally but nothing else happens... I cleaned it up with a cloth, for hours, to get the sticky thing out, took the memory and HD out, it looks all right but the memory smells alcohol. I need to get this thing fixed before my GF or my parents realise what actually happened. Any help is much appreciated!

Ok, firstly, it's MacBook (not mackbook :)). Secondly, you probably should've left out the 'cheating on your girlfriend' part (some may refuse to even help you now that they've read that). Thirdly, I think you've ruined it. You left a MacBook turned on with champagne fillling it up. I don't even think you should expect it to be repairable, if you ask me.

 

Take it back to the store, and see if they will replace it.

Ok, I got the flee the country thing (that's one of the options). "Mackbook" was a typo, I'm using my mates (yak) Windows PC to write this. My girlfriend treats me bad so don't worry about me cheating on her.

 

Well, I am sure that the HD is ok, and the memory is working (I've tested) so I guess that leaves wondering about the processor and the MB. But can I buy those and fix it myself or shouldn't I.

Unless you have a way of determining what the failed component is, (may be more than 1), no use buying anything to even try.

 

Best bet, take it to an authorized Apple repair center. At the very least maybe they are knowledge enough to find out if a specific part is a fault.

(Maybe if you're lucky and its only a CPU, you MIGHT have a option you can do yourself. Anything else your looking big $$$)

That's even better than when i got hammered of off margaritas and passed out on my couch only to wake up the next morning to find i'd puked all over my macbook pro which was on the floor below my head! Luckily mine was closed so after about 4 hours of wiping it off and cleaning it it works like a charm except i think the infrared got shorted out cuz my remote doesn't work anymore. Oh well, never used it anyway.

 

I agree that you should take it to an apple service center and tell them you spilled champange on it and see what they can do for you. I'd leave out the other stuff though. They don't need to know what led to the spilling of the champagne upon the thousand dollar computer ;)

Enjoy your new ChampBook. Stick it in a bucket of ice and enjoy the bubblies.

 

Seriously, try your luck with Apple Service. I don't think wetting your MacBook is covered by the warranty, but at least they'll be able to fix/replace the parts you champagned. Maybe a quick white lie will help you with the free repair, but if it doesn't work...

 

I bet it'll cost more than the champagne. Good luck with the ChampBook and GF.

Thanks a lot for all the guidance! So I decided to listen to you guys and took my ChampBook to Apple Service. It's funny how it is completly different from other computer shops (well at least where I live). It's all cool and tidy, and the staff pretty helpful. So I told them my computer wasn't working, too embarresed to say I spilled champagne over my U$1500 computer. He asked to have a look, came back after 15 min and asked for my name and number, and said they'd call me when is ready! But I thought... "He didn't even ask for my warranty papers, hummm, he probably thinks I'm gonna pay for it". So I asked him if he wouldn't need my warranty papers. He said no, I know is still under warranty, but then he smiled and said: "You understand you lost your warranty, yes?" he continued "But here at apple we care about our customers, we'll change all the damaged parts for you. No probs. No need to register this, ok?". I just couldn't believe, that's so cool. No other computer company would do anything similar. In fact one of my mates had his IBM to die on him, not his fault, and it took a lot of arguments and shouting, and going back and forth before they could do something about it. Apple is just the best!

No wonder Macs are more expensive, they're covering the costs of careless customer mistakes like that!

Ok, bad news... for me... they called me yesterday and said that the mb and the cpu are gone and they cannot fix it. They said it's all gone. I guess they've changed their mind about all the {censored} they said before. I'm living in Moscow at the moment, but I bought my mac in the US. Fu****g cu**s. I've bought a new one. So any ideas on how to use my champbook (other than keep it in the fridge for next party)?

It might look ok, but if that stick is damaged and you hook it up to your new macbook, you could end up ruining it too. You should probably play it safe and just get a new stick.

See who made the ram, there ought to be a little sticker on it. If it was Crucial or Ultra, they are really good about testing memory for you and replacing it without many questions asked. I'm sure other companies are as well, but I only speak of experience with those. You sould be able to just mail it in, and get good ram back.

You could ebay this easily. If your LCD is ok, then you should easily get atleast 250$.

Now about the memory, I had a chat to the guy at the service centre and he told me that if I cleaned the contacts of the memory with clean alcohol (not champagne) and let it dry for a while, it couldn't do any harm, but things in Russia are a bit dodgy, if you know what I mean... hard to trust... There is no ebay in Russia, I cannot recieve payments or pay anything from here. Guess I got myself a pretty cool, good looking puzle. I'll try get this thing to work, no matter how long it takes :thumbsup_anim:! Gotta do it.

 

Now my new mb really seems a fair bit faster with the new Core 2 Duo... I didn't expect much difference... Maybe that is just me, but let me try it out a few days more before I say anything for sure.
