Problem with Linksys WRT54G Router...

For a while now, I have been having problems where my connection stops working for some unknown reason. I own a Linksys (WRT54G) Router and I'm using Mac OS X (10.4.9). I'm using my iMac's built-in ethernet to connect to it and the problem is that whenever it disconnects, System Preferences shows my IP address as (169.254.207.11), which is not my Internal nor External IP Address. I don't even know what it is; however, unplugging the modem and router for a long time (5-10 minutes) USUALLY fixes the problem but sometimes doesn't even fix it.

My goal for this is to set it up where I don't have to constantly babysit the router whenever it feels like not working and figure out why it is assigning me that odd IP address.

an ip address of 169.* means that your computer has not received an IP from dhcp on the router for whatever reason. Personally I would suggest you update the firmware on your wrt54g router to dd-wrt firmware. go to www.dd-wrt.com and it will have all the info you need to do this. I will warn you that you could brick your router and make it not function but from the sounds of it, that's just about what it's doing now anyway.

check your version first found on the first 4 symbols of your serial number located on the underside of your router:

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0

CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0

CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1

CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1

CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0

CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2

CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0

CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1

CDFA = WRT54G v4.0

CDFB = WRT54G v5.0

CDFC = WRT54G v5.1

CDFD = WRT54G v6.0

CDFE = WRT54G v7.0

the lower versions are better but there are instructions available for 1-7. PM me if you need help doing it.

DD-WRT or Open-WRT are the best ways to go. Perfectly stable versions of Linux that are much better than the cheap Linksys versions.

Alternatively you could connect to your router and add a reboot script that runs every day.

Which gen. of the router do you have? If it's an early one with original firmware it will choke when running torrents. This is due to the way the flavour of linux running on that router caches IPS -afaik

That's a good point. I have a WRT54G Version 5.0. I'm not sure if this is old enough to have the original firmware; however, I have seen them go up to the 8th version or more.

As for DD-WRT, would that fix the torrent problem? Also, which version should I download for my router since I'm looking at the downloads and it appears there's like 23 versions. I'm assuming the most recent one (Version 23 SP2) would be the right choice but I wouldn't want to risk bricking my router. Thanks for the help everyone!

Hi,

I use dd-wrt on my WRT54GS too, and i'm really happy with it. It's perfectly stable.

I recommand you to flash the original linksys firmware to dd-wrt, but beware to read carefully the tutorials before.

Good luck

the version 5 doesn't run linux before you flash the firmware it runs vxworks. It's alittle more difficult to flash the memory. I would suggest upgrading to the dd-wrt firmware just because it's so much better. I agree with DJspike...read the tutorials over and over until you know exactly what you are doing, I would also keep the web pages you may need up during the firmware upgrade just incase you run into problems or need the reference.

http://www.scorpiontek.org/portal/content/view/27/36 there is a great tutorial there.

also you can only use one version of the dd-wrt.v23_micro_generic.bin IT MUST BE THE MICRO!!!!!!! everything else won't fit on the memory and will brick your router!!!! READ THE TUTORIAL SEVERAL TIMES, and download all the files you'll need, save the pages of the tutorial or print them or something so you can reference them. GOODLUCK!!!
