Can't mount disc images

I have 10.4.8 installed on VMWare Server, and after a lot of configuring of VMWare, I've got Mac OS running smoothly and relatively reliably. My biggest current issue is the network not working, and I think its related to drivers for the built-in ethernet device. From what I've read, it seems like the Tulip drivers will help (though I can't be sure), so I've downloaded them, and transferred them to the mac via iso's I've mounted with Daemon-Tools.

But to build the tulip drivers, I need to install XCode (which I'll need in the future anyways). I downloaded the .dmg for that from Apple's site (to my internet-connected host PC), and transferred the file to the mac... but it won't let me mount the image. Any attempt to do so results in "Device not configured". I've redownloaded the file several times to make sure its not corrupt, and also tried an older version, with the same results. I haven't tried other .dmg files yet, but I have a feeling I'll get the same results.

I've also found this thread http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=45700 describing how to fix a mounting issue in 10.4.9, but haven't gotten that to work for me (in 10.4.8).

I'm a pretty new Mac user (as of last Wednesday), so I don't really understand much about what's going wrong... a Mac issue, a VMWare issue, or a user-incompetance issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can mount the XCode image, so I can install XCode, so I can Make the tulip drivers, so I can see if they fix my network, so I can connect to the Internet, so I can see if Mac will do the things I want it to do.

As for the network, thanks for that link... after adding ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" to my VMWare settings, I was able to get to a point where I can work on getting the network configured and connected. My learning curve hadn't reached a point where I knew Maxxuss was something I should bpay attention to.
