Right, this is a very simple matter, but I had to dig the forum for hours yesterday before I could find this info, as it was deeply buried in another thread.

If you have just installed OS X on a Bad Axe1, you won't have any sound.

Download this kext from here (courtesy of Kiko):

Now go to /System/Library/Extensions and replace the old AppleHDA.kext with the new one (needless to say, unzip it first   )
Repair permissions

Reboot.
