Right. I have only had one notebook in my life and it had a 14 inch screen. Anyway:

1) A 17 inch one is hardly a portable, more like a desktop replacement.

2)That is very much a matter of personal tastes. There is a balance between portability and comfort. Personally I'd buy a 15 inch one if I travelled a lot (which is no longer the case)

3)Because a larger screen is more comfortable, obviously

4)See above

Probably I wouldn't buy a MacBook as it is now, the screen is too small for my tastes. (not to mention the price in Euro, which is almost twice as much as an equivalent PC notebook)

Anyway, I voted for 17 inch as I hardly ever travel these days (contrary to the past).

I have owned and used a 14", a 15.4", and a 17".

Disadvantages of a 17" are that it is extremely heavy and unweildy to carry and travel with, and are very un-portable. No good for lugging to class, around the airport, travelling, etc. (all of which I have done with ALL of my laptops).

On the other hand, the 17" screen is enormous and gorgeous, and is fantastic to use, when not lugging it around. If you are using it as a desktop replacement, which you will only move a handful of times, it's the BEST option. I recommended a 17" recently to a grandparent who migrates from Florida to Michigan from winter and summer, and NEVER moves their laptop except twice a year, but wanted something more portable than taking their entire computer tower + monitor, etc.

15-15.4" is the best as a middle-ground. Good screen size, not bad portability.

14" is the biggest screen to get for someone who wants to be ultraportable. 11-13" is the best for people who are strictly "road warriors."

If weight is not an issue, then the 17" is the way to go. But if you travel a lot w/ a notebook, the weight becomes an issue very quickly. Seriously.

After using 14", 15.4", and 17", I will never go bigger than a 14". But I have high portability needs, and never use my laptop on a desk/table surface, but my lap.

Hope that helps,
