OK, it took me two days(mostly on graphic card) to make almost everything working on my Dell Inspiron 8600. Here are some tricks which I hope will be useful for others.

I used Jas 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 intel AMD. Choose additional packages like logonwindow, powermanagment. But don't install Titan support.

Soundcard, firewire, usb immediately working.

Built-in ethernet bcm440x doesn't work, followed some guide, maybe this one:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry229681

grab the file IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip, but you only have to replace Plugins/AppleBCM440XEthernet.kext.

Buit-in Wireless Dell truemobile 1300 doesn't work. Followed this guide

http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/i...php/t41447.html

find the Wireless.Support.pkg.zip (from 10.4.7) and grabbed it. Install it. If the device appears as en0, then you have to change it en1 to make the airport work (in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations/NetworkInterface.plist)

Graphics card Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Go 32Mb with Sharp WUXGA 1920x1200 LCD panel.

It is working upon installation, but only with 1024x768, no QE/CI support, no change of resolutions. I tried Titan, Natit, MacVidia .... The final thing works for me is NVidiaEFI. But remember don't install additional drivers upon initial installation. Find the Alllaptop.zip from

http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/i...t37630-100.html

and put the two kext in Extensions. Now I have 1920x1200 support, QE/CI support, and change of resolutions.

Finally, for newbies like me. When install kext to /System/Library/Extensions, make sure

1) change the owner to root:wheel

2) change the mode to 755 or use diskutil to fix permissions.

3) rm /Sys../Lib../Extensions.kextcache and Extensions.mkext and reboot.

Great to hear, I've been trying to install it on my 9300 but no luck. Always get that stupid "diskarb" error. Wonder it is due to the Titan drivers?

Let me follow your guide tonight and see what we got.

Thanks.

Hey, I have the same laptop with similar specs. I have Quartz Extreme / Core Image working with JAS 10.4.8 DVD ticking the NVIDIA options. Graphics seems to be slower than using linux or windows though. I'm not sure if you guys have a better solution for graphics.

My wireless is not working. Intel pro wireless: Go to iwi2200 on google code. You can find out more there.

My soundcard is working out of the box.

Ethernet working with the IOnetworkingfamily.kext you can find this on the useful links on the main tutorial page of this forum.

Powermanagement: Same as above.

My CPU seems to work slower than before. Maybe is because of the 8.8.1 kernel ?

I have the same laptop, Inspiron 8600, and the same video card, GeForce FX 5200 Go 32MB, but when I install JaS 10.4.8, even without Titan support, video doesn't appear to work. The grey wheel just spins and then freezes, while the setup music starts playing. I'm not even sure how to try adding NVidiaEFI as I can't seem to get to a terminal unless I set up the computer first. If anyone has some advice to offer, I would be most grateful.

This is what was happening to me if I use natit or Titan.

You can boot to single-user mode (console) by "-s". (Press F8 to bring up Darwin boot menu).

Then "mount -uw /"

Goto /System/Library/Extensions, add or remove kext here(if so, remove /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and Extensions.mkext and fix permissions). and reboot.

You can also try safe boot mode "-x".

Summary of my experience with GeForce FX 5200 Go (32MB) with Jas 10.4.8:

1) upon installation, no titan. Can boot with 1024x768 screen. no qe/ci.

2) with Titan or Natit, with or w/o AGPpart, in safe boot mode, it works. But never in regular mode( either black screen or "grey wheels"). Natit worked once, but freezes once I moved the mouse. (FECH is lucky on this).

3) NVidiaEFI 1.0.2 (from macvidia.com) works most of the time for me! I got grey wheels sometimes but eventually ok when I rebooted.

AGPpart doesn't work with NVidiaEFI.

Here's a report from Sys Profiler:

NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200

Type: Display

Bus: PCI

VRAM (Total): 32 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x0324

Revision ID: 0x00a1

Displays:

Display:

Resolution: 1920 x 1200

Depth: 32-bit Color

Core Image: Supported

Main Display: Yes

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Supported

Display:

Status: No display connected

I have tried external monitor; it worked but no mirrors.

The animation did appear a little slow than Windows or Linux. Indeed, it cannot play DVD in full screen. But when I lowered my resolution to 1024x768, DVD plays ok.

Thanks fdboy, with default install of 10.4.8 on Dell Inspiron 5160 with Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Go the graphics were unusable (choppy, impossible scrolling)

Your link to alllaptop.zip was aan absolute saver

Thanks

My Inspiron 8600 (Banias 1,5GHz, NVidia5650Go 128MB) is working like charm :) After a lot of trial and error, I finally got fully 3D graphics working with Natit 0.2 dual (with my vga's device ID) in two scenarios:

  • Mobile: Working with the notebook's screen with a resolution of 1680x1050
  • Docked: Placed inside the PR10X Docking Station I got two 19" TFTs working as external screens. One connected to the VGA and one to the DVI out of the docking station. To use both outputs you need to switch the primary screen before OS X is booting. The easiest way is to press F12 after getting the bootscreen (notebook screen shows boot devices), pressing Fn+F8 (boot device menu is moving to the VGA connected TFT) and pressing enter to start booting darwin. Sound strange, but actually turns the 8600 into a nice workstation without the need of a matrox twin/tripplehead box.

A few infos/notes for you and me to remember:

  • Installation of 10.4.8 JaS Intel only with Laptop power management, Sigmatel Audio, Loginscreenfix. No VGA drivers. Languages, Fonts and X11 as needed.
  • Add device id to Natit dual 0.2 (GeForce.kext, Natit.kext, NVDANV40Hal.kext, NVDAResman.kext)
  • Broadcom LAN as mentioned earlier by replacing the IONetworkingFamily.kext
  • My atheros miniPCI (not original device) is working as a airport using its modified IO80211Family.kext
  • Frontrow works when FrontRowUpdate1.3 is installed (via Pacifist) and using a modified FrontRowPass.kext
  • Do not install AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002 since it's fxxxxxg the atheros card
  • Do not install Update to 10.4.9 (I did not try that one, but may destroy everything)

cheers, Bert

Does anyone have these old Alllatop.zip??
