Problem With My Color Depth

I've been having a problem ever since I installed mac. I have 10.4.9 right now. I've edited the com.apple.boot.plist so I could get 1280x1024x32 res and color depth because when I first installed it only had 1024x768. I've found that the color depth is really low, for exampled when I open front row instead of the nice gradient effect gray behind the menu it's big grey lines and isn't blended. I also have vista on this machine and I don't get that weird color effect. My video card is ATI Radeon x1300XL 256mb PCI-E. I'm hoping there might be a way to edit in com.apple.boot.plist to maybe force more colors...
