External storage for the aTV

Ok, I'm new here, and I don't have an apple TV yet, but I will be getting one soon, and one of the things I've seen people discuss is the USB port on the back and how it's basically useless right now, so they replace the internal drive to get more memory - but then there may be heat issues and it still limits you...

but I had an idea that I'm not sure will work or if others may think is useful, so please let me know what you think

what if, instead of replacing the interneral drive, you used an adapter (or more likely a series of adapters) to change the now female ide cable into a female usb cable, then modified the back of the unit to make it externally accessible.

you could theoretically use any harddrive (3.5") at all in an external case as your main drive...you could even set up a usb hub and hook up many drives (so long as the aTV is capable of booting from one)

any thoughts?

Well they can boot from an external USB drive using the built in USB currently (

) so I would say it won't be long before theres a plugin to expand the storage through it. Plus putting 20 or more IDE pins through a USB port just isn't possible!

well its definately possible, because that's how external drives currently work...i just thought it would be easier to have the drive externally now so it can be accessed quickly and reduce the heat inside the unit for upgrades that have faster rpms
