I've been wrestling with trying to get a Buffalo Airstation G54 USB recognised as an Airport Extreme. It does contain the Broadcom chip so I thought I might be able to adapt the drivers to work. It didn't...

So I decided to take the unit apart to see exactly what chipset it contain only to find that it contains a minipci card!!! I immediately removed it and stuck it in my laptop minipci slot. Checking the Vendor and Devices ID's revealed the folowing: VENDOR: 14e4 DEVICE: 4320 Excatly the same as in the unmodified AppleAirport2.kext!! It was looking good.

I put the original AppleAirport2.kext back reboot and hey presto my Dell Latitude C640 now contains an Airport Extreme card :(

The Model Number of the USB Airstation is WLI-USB-G54, I bought it 4 months ago from PC World in the UK for £34.

Good luck in finding one, it works a treat. I'm going to try it in a Apple iBook next week beacuse if it works it is a much cheaper alternative to the Airport Extreme.

I'm writing this now on wireless :)

I should also point out I am also using this card in Windows. I got it working with the drivers for a Buffalo PCI card from the US Buffalo website.

Unzip and place the kext file that I'm including in /System/Library/Extensions. When asked to authenticate press OK and enter your password at the prompt. Open up the Terminal application and type

"sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext" enter your password and type "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext" reboot and it should work

YOU ARE THE MAN! I was pulling my hair out trying to restore my backup of the IO80211Family.kext to no avail. That "chown" did the trick! Thanks for much for your post! My Airport was not even recognized in the Network! I thought I toasted the firmware in the card or something. What exactly does that command string DO ? If you have time to answer... :(
