3nigma
Hi all! Do actual Apple iSight cameras work with OSx86? Is anyone using non-Apple webcams that are reading as iSights to OS X? Any playing with this, with iChat? Just curious, -3nigma
tuxuser33
Probably any cam with firewire interface will work. Personaly I use Logitech Quickcam Web Express with the help of macam 0.9 (free) and iChatUSBCam 2.1. (commercial). The built in microphone wan't work in 10.4.8. 3nigma
Do you think it has to be firewire? I wonder if it wouldn't be recognized as a USB... I have an iSight cam that I use with my iBook, I'd like to try it on an OSx86 box. Hopefully I'll have one soon. The only problem is, firewire ports are few and far between on my hardware, only my Apple machines have it. I wonder if a firewire-to-usb converter cable would work or not... -3nigma
shavermcspud
hi all, i use a pyro 1394 webcam from which ive had from way way back, from my old iMac, i intended to use it in windows, but found it worked fine on my old mac, and the same now it works straight away, on my hackintosh, also any DV camcorder works a treat too, but the resolution on mine seems to be massive so the preview is only a small portition of what the DV Camera's ccd picks up
success2be
Newegg.com has firewire PCI cards that you might want to check out. I was looking at them yesterday and a couple listed support for OS X.

I was looking at them yesterday and a couple listed support for OS X. The only bummer is I'm going to be on a laptop, so no PCI =(. That's cool though, thanks guys -3nigma

Vipersfate
Yeah, you can get those pcmcia cards anywhere. Best Buy if you're in the states, any other tech stores will have them.
Danyel
Hi all! Do actual Apple iSight cameras work with OSx86? Is anyone using non-Apple webcams that are reading as iSights to OS X? Any playing with this, with iChat? Just curious, -3nigma Hi 3nigma: I'm using Quickcam Chat with MacCam 0.90 (Freeware) along with CamFrog (Freeware and Payware). Believe it or not, the same camera actually looks better in OS X then in Windows. Go figure?! Anyhow, I liked CamFrog (Freeware) so much that I bought the payware version. I can use OS X or Windows versions with the same camera.
WiteWulf
I use a Sony EyeToy, the macam drivers and iChatUSB and iChat works a treat on my machine. Damn sight cheaper than shelling out for an iSight (although, obviously, nowhere near as high quality for the audio and video captured).
naplo
I have an integrated USB Cam in my Lenovo Notebook, which is detected by Mac OSX. In the Preferences the Host driver "AppleUSBEHCI" is shown. But if I start MacCam, theres no camera detected. How can I solve this Problem?
superkona
try a camcorder - my panasonic gs15 works with both ichat and skype, no drivers needed.. added bonus is it also picks up usb audio device. this came in handy back when my audio in was not working on my chipset.. grab a camcorder and plug it in via usb or firewire, you may be surprised at the outcome. naplo
But I want to use my integrated camera. So what can I do to get it working...
success2be
iChatUSB's web site's Camera Guide page shows some logitech cameras don't require iChatUSB with the OS X 10.4.9 update. So does that mean iChat would work with all USB cams too?
Diginerd
My Apple i Sight works flawlessly. So well that when I had it plugged in during installation it offered to take my pic using it to associate with my user account. :-)
superkona
My Apple i Sight works flawlessly. So well that when I had it plugged in during installation it offered to take my pic using it to associate with my user account. :-) i just got an isight on ebay and plugged it it, not recognized.. it is detected and works under xp, not in osx86. i have read a few places that it might work if osx is reinstalled but i hate to do that if there is another way. has anyone installed an isight and got it working when it was not present when u installed osx? other firewire devices / camcorders work fine. using jas 10.4.8 here

But this problem occurs to any FireWire device (quite irritating).. I'm using a E6600 on a Intel Bad-Axe 2 motherboard with JaS 10.4.8 upgraded to 10.4.9. success2be
There're posts on other forums that the Xbox Live camera works out of the box on OS X 10.4.9 Its supposed to be UVC compatible so no drivers are needed. I'm going to try it tonight and everything goes as planned, then all I need is a usb mic to get iChat working.
superkona
thanks for the info - i have a feeling i am going to have to reinstall osx in order to get it working, will try an upgrade to 10.4.9 1st - have read other places that the combo updates sometimes fix unknown device issues. success2be
I can confirm that the Xbox Live 360 camera does work. Although I'm getting flickering in the video image using iChat. Anybody else getting flickering too? I might try to get another UVC compliant camera such as Creative or Logitech.
success2be
I tried using my Xbox Live 360 cam yesterday via iChat with my brother and everything worked out just fine. The flickering problem was only during video preview option.

superkona
At what point during the install did you plug it in? My Jas 10.4.8 dvd install system profiler app still sees my isight as an uknown device - have not gone through an install yet, still backing everything up and looking for last minute fixes without having to reinstall.. Diginerd, or anyone else with an isight workin on osx86, does the profiler app (in utilities) on installer dvd see your isight?
superkona
the solution for my isight not recognized problem was getting a new firewire card - the via vt6303 chipset was not happy with my isight, vt6307 is working - yay!
