Antivirus Software

Please, cite some sources on the supposed increase of Mac viruses. Name one that we should be worrying about.

YOU DO NOT YET NEED ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FOR MAC OS.

Regardless of what you do anywhere on the Internet, you will NOT receive a virus which can do anything to your Hackintosh.

And I repeat it again....

If the Mac faithfull keep this belief that they do not/will not ever need an antivirus, it WILL be the downfall of the Mac Platform as a whole. It's just bound to happen. You nay sayers should stop just saying "you dont need a antivirus on a Mac", and at least direct the person to ClamXav(http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/). If you keep this arrogant attitude towards there possibly being an exploitable virus weakness in OSX, you will be part of the reason that the first successful virus succeeds. I ASSURE YOU that somewhere in a dark corner, some hacker is bangin away 18hours a day attempting to be the first to say "I DID IT!! I infected OSX". :D:unsure:

And for the record...no i don't run an AV yet, but I do have Clam downloaded and ready to install, as well as sophos for whenever I decide to take the plunge.

OSXTasy,

I don't necessarily disagree with your point of view, but I do have to question you on one thing. When a Mac virus with the potential to do some actual damage does appear, don't you think it will be big news? More to the point what good does having these products downloaded do you? Surely if a true mac virus does appear in the wild, at the very least these AV clients will need new signature files, if not an entirely new AV engine.

A few years ago I would have agreed A Nonny ^^^

for the most part I still do....BUT

if someone wants to get an AV program it won't hurt. There are a few you can get through torrents...

While Virus aren't a problem, if it makes someone feel safer, don't disuade them....worse-case scenario they waste their time...

I also want to note that while it's not ever close to the level of PC...

annoyances like spyware/adware do exist on some small scale. While not the victum myself., I've seen an Imac behaving like a PC - totally bogged down, slow, pop-ups, etc...

I don't disuade anyone, but I tell from my experience that once I installed an antivirus software, then months later I decided I didn't need it, that was from feb-03 when I got my PowerBook since then I have not a problem.

Of course I do not open any mail attachments as a rule and I use popup blockers.

Good point, you don't want to be sending you friends viri. I'll think about installing one just for that fact. Food for thought: Shouldn't the people using Windows scan their email attachments before they open them? Why should I have to worry about their security habits?

I just don't want someone wasting their money on something that isn't needed. If said person is truly wanting one, then download the free ClamXAV. Otherwise, don't even bother with spending money on virus software that isn't needed.

Since i dont want to quote what a Nonny Moose said, I wont,

I had a virus, I didnt notice any speed changes, and I have no idea what it is, but i had it, its best be safe, get ClamX AV, be safe, besides its free, just run it before you sleep once every few months

If you have any common sense, you will not get a virus or spyware, at the OS level, its almost impossible to bypass the UNIX restrictions/permissions. Granted an app maybe and this is a maybe get infected like ichat. And remember to always use sudo since if you are a noob you can do some real damage as su.

No need really unless you have no real experience and want the comfort.

I use AntiVirus even on my Macs and on my Linux boxes to make sure that I do not inadvertently spread something to the few Windows systems that I have in my network. I had that happen back in 2002 where I was using a Linux file server that happened to get a couple "viruses" along with some downloads. Sure they did nothing on the Linux box and in fact couldn't even run, but the first time Windows tried to connect into Samba, it did it's metadata scan and all the sudden it was... messed... up.

Quick explainiation of my setup...

I have a Linux router set up between my internet connection and all of my computers providing a firewall through Shorewall (I know, just a front-end for IPtables/IPchains), a SSH server for remote access to all computers in the network if needed, avast running alongside the firewall to filter most viruses directly out of the network stream, a proxy server so that even ZIP files and other archives are scanned, and a fileserver with SFTP access so I can log in remotely and grab a file or two that I need if I accidentally leave something at home.

The network is divided into 3 zones, 1 being the DMZ which only houses an Xbox360 and a Wii because their online services don't seem to like the restrictions of the firewall, 1 Windows zone which uses the silent proxy server so that all data must be delivered via proxy to reduce the likelihood of something malicious getting to them, and 1 Non-MS zone housing Linux, Mac, an AppleTV and a few other wireless gadgets which have the option to use the proxy (is automatically configured via dhcp) however the user can disable it manually.

Every zone is protected with ClamAV filtering of the network packets. The Windows zone will even filter between individual systems as long as they are on the Windows Wireless network. It adds an additional 15 ms of latency, but in the big scheme of things that is not that big of a deal for me.

Oh, I forgot to mention... all zones have both wired and wireless access through the linux router via individual wireless and wired network cards for each zone.

The entire project was ~400 in new parts (256 MB memory, 3 Netgear WAG311 A/B/G wireless network cards, 3 Netgear FA311 network cards, a 40GB hard drive and a couple new cables) and an old 400 Mhz computer I had sitting in the closet ready to throw out.

In turn, it has given substantial peace of mind. Really is more of a "business" set up, but it only took a couple weekends to do it is certain to block pretty much everything, which you can't always say for a software firewall sitting on a client machine.

You don't need it now but i'm sure that will not always be the case. With the rise in popularity of OSX more hackers will make viruses for it. Rather than downloading a few version then it might be worth downloading and installing it now.

I'm not saying there is a problem right now but we might need it for later.
