JaS 10.4.8 working in VMware but...

I installed JaS 10.4.8 in my VMware Server 1.0.2 (on Gentoo linux) and it worked fine. Unfortunately, my network doesn't work because the network card comes up with a MAC address of 00:00:00:00:00.

I set ethernet0.virtualDev="e1000" in my .vmx file. Without that I don't get an ethernet card at all.

Any ideas how to fix it.

I followed this with VMware Server 1.0.2:

http://www.paulooi.com/2005/10/15/vmware-n...rk-mac-osx-x86/

extract iso

mount

copy folder from cd to desktop

open terminal

cd Desktop

sudo ./install

enter password when asked.

reboot.

This only worked with bridged for me. It detected, and got an IP in nat mode, but couldn't access network content.

That is the proceedure for installing Maxuss' PCNET driver.

You don't need it if you are using e1000 in your vmx file. Make sure e1000 starts connected.

My OS X 10.4.8 can access th web, using either SUSE 10.1 or Vista as host.

My recollection is after system is installed, you set up your internet using system preferences, network.

You have to configure it.

I don't have DHCP working; have to assign static IP address, specify router and DNS.

I use bridged mode, but my recollection is the other worked.

Hope this helps.

Well, I can't get either to work. When using e1000 I get a MAC address of 00:00:00:00:00 which won't allow me to do DHCP (which is the entire point of me creating this VM. I need to test our DHCP services with Macs which is very difficult in my VM closed test environment).

I removed the e1000 and installed the PCNet driver and I get the same results. I've used JaS 10.4.6 and JaS 10.4.8 with the same results.

When I use VMware Workstation 5.5 and 6.0 beta on a different computer running Gentoo Linux I get the same results. Must be something with Gentoo.

This is apparently normal. How positive are you that VMware won't dish DHCP to a machine with a NULL MAC?

My Vmware/MacOSX install won't grab an IP over DHCP either. But networking works, however -- you just need to set it up manually using ifconfig and friends. My System Preferences/Network proggy got munged somehow -- dumps core when I fire it up, so I can't check the OSX tools.

I'm in the process of downloading the 10.4.8 JaS image. Hopefully this fixes my munged Network binary, and if I leave my VMware config in place, maybe it'll autodetect the card and set it up via DHCP this time.. not that I really care about that, as its a three command problem to set up networking on the Mac.
