well about 3 days ago my dads friend asked me if I'd help em choose a half decent pc to buy.... well today I ended up going with em to Future Shop (Canadian Best Buy) and bought a computer.... HP some Athlon X2 not important well anyway as most computers that come from there now a day.... it came with Vista.... so since this guy is old enough to be my grandfather and knows the bare basics of pc's I help'd em to setup it up to be usable... (hook it up plug it in.... go threw whatever the oem prompts are...)

anyway this was my first Vista experience... as probably all of you have I had heard tones of lovely things about vista.... and believed in all the possibilities, like vista being 99% spyware:P

well anyway I tried it and I found it annoying to the least to relearn where everything is located for me who's been using computers from the amiga days till now(even if I don't sound like it always).... saying this I found that this was likely gonna be a major pain for anyone who knows just the slight basics of computers and even worse for a person old enough to be my gramps.....but he said he'd give it a shot so we'll see...

anyway.... my question is for those of you who have tried Vista..... do you seriously think its any good?

my personal answer is no...... one guy tried to fight me on it and I came to understand that Vista is more of a new GUI then a new OS...... besides that its apparently has a better firewall and I suppose whatever is left over from Giant AntiSpy

anyway whats your thoughts....:S

I voted yes. I like Vista. There are some things which have definitely been improved... However, after a few weeks of using it, I felt that it was just a revamped XP with a shiny new skin. Obviously that's not 100% true, though.

Anyway, I still like it. Even though I don't use it as my main OS, it sits on my 250GB WD just in case I need it. ;)

If you've been using computers since the Amiga days I really doubt having to to a single extra mouse click to change your background would be a little too hard.

Barely anything has moved, and the things which haven't aren't hard to 'relearn.'

I've had Vista on our primary home PC for some weeks now and I haven't received a single "Where is x ?" from my those of my family who use this computer which consists of a 10yr old girl, 14yr old boy, computer illiterate 21yr old and my mum who is 40 something (She likes to keep it a secret, haha).

Or maybe there's something I missed, which thing was moved which was so hard for you to figure out with your massive computer experience dating back to the glorious days of the Amiga (Did I point out how much I hate it is when people use primary school arguments like that ? Oh well).

I like Vista, it's now my favourite desktop OS beating out OSX/Ubuntu which where my previous favourites, maybe Edgy or Leopard can win me back but from what I can see so far, I doubt it but who knows.

sorry if I didn't make things clear enough.... the thing is I'm thinking it took me some time to find where things are..... now for a person who the transition from win98 to xp took about 1 year to understand...... explain me how good is that to them?

I didn't just say relearn to imply that its hard for me to get the small bits and pieces.... but rather the fact of why relearn it at all to begin with or if your gonna do that meet people half way..... have a theme that places things in their original locations......

yes there was a "Windows Classic" theme but it did not change my computer back to my computer.... did not make the control panel even appear slightly like the original one:P(item names, item ability)...... the guy asked me if I could find where to shrink the icons down to size..... it appears that vista was created for the blind or something, didn't find anything but maybe I missed something:P.... its small things like this, that can completely throw people off.... even maybe they should have like a thing on the side that explains what things are or some {censored}.... but hell I can see how for many people it would throw people off.....

my explanation to not liking it is that fact that I think it will throw alot of people off..... and I still don't think the change is justified:P firewall or no firewall, dx10 or no dx10, gui or no gui.... some thing that asks you if you want to run something after you just clicked it or not:S which I still think makes no sense:P...

I have tried the fully stripped down one, and it worked ok... still need to get used to some different things. over all I am really not sure if I will like it or not. Most likely I will have to like it in the next 2 years cause MS will make it the standard, and kick XP to the curb.

I like it Vista more then XP, its more user friendly than XP at least , tho i think it is early to say anything like "its the crappiest Os ever released" or "Its the best thing ever happened to my pc/mac."

So far i have been nicely surpriced by its improved network capabilities, and the gui its just fine.

I gave it a no. have to assume it looks really nice, but thats it.

For me it is too hard to handle for fast working like in OS X.

Whoever loves it - congrats that it works for you ;)

I am triple booting right now, XP, Vista and OSX and I must say that I do like the look of the interface but it does remind me of OSX quite a bit actually.

The security dialog that keeps popping up makes that PC-Mac video actually quite true to reality.

When you look at the interface it is far more crowded with icons, symbols, text than the OSX interface. The whole screen looks incredibly ' busy'. More bells and whistles isn't always better and I think the windows interface has actually gone a little overboard. You actually NEED all those built in wizards to be able to do anything. I think the interface of OSX is actually a lot simpler, more ergonomic and better because of a true consistent look and feel. The only wierd thing about OSX is the use of the trashbin, just like the use of the start button in the indows95,98,Me,NT4,2000,2003,XP interface.

The way OSX implements security is very similar to Vista but far less annoying.

I say OSX is better! And the only excuse to use Windows is the fact that there is more software out for it, more games and it's easier to be compatible with others although OSX has definitely come a long long way and is basically almost as compatible.

Just like many others... tried it to see what is all the fuss about, and deleted it after a couple of days, it's just a pile of unnecessary {censored} IMO. For my current Windows needs, XP is more than enough.

Yeah I like Vista.

been using it for about 6months (from pre-beta 2 days).

Yes, I can see why people dont like it. Its chunky, slow and downright annoying sometimes. but its also different. Noone liked XP when it was released, and a lot of people stuck to 98/2000 for a good year or so. Then they moved, because well they had to. The same people are complaining about Vista now.

Its not just m$ though. I remember one guy who hated OSX. He prefered the "old" macs, and thought OSX was too ugly (and we all know how wrong he is lol). but I betcha hes not the only person who thinks/thought the same.

Vista is a big step for MS. It didnt take them 6/7 years to build an OS because they were sat on their laurels. Everything, from the core kernel upwards, has been rebuilt and redesigned (well apart from maybe a few icons and a BSOD lol), to cater more not just for current pc's, but for "next-gen" media centres that are going to have upwards of 4 processing cores, masses of HDD space and a lovely GFX card to boot.

Anyway my two cents :P later all

I love it... whats with peopel saying it jsut like XP with a new GUI.... these people really didnt; look under the hood of vista from the new Kernal to the Drectx 10 and up. infact one could agrues its nothing like xp expect its based on the NT kernal and runs on NTFS. and if thats how peopel say it then Xp waz 2000 with a gui update........and 2000 is nothing but nt.4 with a new GUI get my point?

so much better the xp by far but I betting OSX 15.0.0 will br right behined it and I wouldn;t be supired to see osx 15.0.0 deleayed a little jsut to recapture the OS spetrume of techlogie and style back to the OS world....

as far as linux gose.... its still going down hill ......

my 2 cents worth

Well, my opinion is well known.

Anyway, I come mainly from Linux and for me OS X is everything I always wanted from Linux and I (almost) never got.

However XP has almost always been somewhere in a partition, because of the few applications which are Windows only.

These days the only apps which keep me from deleting XP are some of my chess games (the Fritz series and Chessmaster 10).

I can now run XP with Parallels, which is a lot more convenient, of course, but still no Chessmaster 10, as it needs 3D acceleration.

Edit: I have just realized that Chessmaster 9000 runs fine in Parallels, so I am a step nearer to a computer without Wlndows partitions (except for the virtual one in Parallels)

And Vista?

I have plenty of space in my hard drives, so it has been sitting there pretty much idle since early December. But its days are numbered, I could delete it even now.

A few reasons why I don't like Vista:

1) A lot of software is incompatible, including my Fritz chess games.

2)It grinds my HD almost forever and I can't understand the reason. If I fire up the task manager there is nothing special going on.

3) Security: it is not a bit better than XP. I have Avast + all the Windows security on. However every time I run Ad-Aware

and Spybot I find plenty of malware.

4) Like the poster above I find the interface a mess and unintuitive.

5) The eye candy does nothing for me. I much prefer OS X or Linux from that point of view.

With a legit version I loaded from scratch on one of my computers, I ended up having to activate it 5 seperate times, even though I never changed hardware. The last time I had to do it was when I plugged in an iPod. Yep, that's right. Plugging in an iPod caused a reactivation request. I found it to be often slow even though I had 2GB RAM, a dual core proc, and a RAID 0 drive set.

Last week I finally dumped Vista in favor of hackintosh after having used my MB Pro for the last nine months or so. It just works so much better overall. There are still some things I miss about Windows, but nothing I miss about Vista. So I use Parallels with XP.

First of all, expecting an OS to be exactly the same forever is ridiculous.

Second, your examples of having to 'relarn' things, or that things have been changed is also ridiculous.

You say that they didn't make the Control Panel 'even appear slightly like the original one' yet facts would like to disagree with you:

control_panel2.jpgcontrolpanelrc2main.jpg

Vista%20-%20Aero%20enabled%20Control%20Panel.PNGwinxp_control_panel.jpg

They're similar as hell and with the new search box it's even easier.

My Computer is also very, very similar:

vista_005.jpgmy-computer(1).jpg

Also, changing icons is easy as hell and I think it's also in the same place (Right click on desktop > View), or in an obvious place (Right click on desktop > Personalise; change desktop icons).

I don't know how someone who has been using computers since the Amiga days can't figure out simple things like that, whereas my 10 year old sister can.. or maybe you haven't even used Vista ? Or have only seen a single screenshot or used it for 3 seconds.

3) Security: it is not a bit better than XP. I have Avast + all the Windows security on. However every time I run Ad-Aware

and Spybot I find plenty of malware.

Malware on Vista ? This is the first I've heard of it, so some screenshots/details would be neat. Edited by robotskip

its gonna be a long day..... look closer at the control panel, use it then comment..... looks don't tell {censored}.... yes I went to the change icons thinger that just let me add network and computer.... wtf the new My Computer and My Network place is... nothing appeared to mention size;)..... theres more too...... trying to copy over all the stuff from this guys comp vista wouldn't let me..... at first I assumed it was cause the folders had been private in xp but when I checked it wasn't..... why it wouldn't let me copy shortcuts, pictures, and music is beyond me..... maybe you have an answer for this..... again I found for a computer geek enthusiast you can likely learn where everything is but is it truly worth the trouble....

again believe me I did look around and found nothing;) at least not in similar locations

I don't expect things to be in the same location but possibly take some time again make a 2nd theme for putting things is a more similar locations:P.....

saying all this I'm thinking of installing Vista on my laptop to learn to tweak it out to accomplish as much as I can.....

also this is my opinion.... thats your opinion.... nice we both can understand this;)

I voted no, and its not because vista is a bad operating system... it {censored} all over XP

But i won't be voting yes until decent Nvidia drivers are released, because at the moment gaming on vista is a slideshow.

which is sad because im really happy with the OS on my lappy

My impressions have been tarnished by bad driver support for a major OS release, thats not as much microsoft's fault as it is nvidia and logitech's. but it still annoys me :P

I tried it and gave it a fair shot for about a month but in the end wiped it and went back to XP. I don't use Windows a whole lot, mostly use Linux & OS X but still like to keep a small 10 GB Windows partition. I guess I just prefer XP, I don't need all the eye candy of Vista, XP works fine for me.

im a heavy linux user

i use XP for gaming really

and some work because i prefer MS office to openoffice.org

Vista seems more "together" than XP mainly because of the new Aero interface. XP seems almost clunky by comparison now

If only Nvidia would get me some decent drivers!!! :'(

> look closer at the control panel, use it then comment.

I've been using it for weeks and it functions more or less exactly the same as the XP one. Maybe instead of simply saying there is a problem and giving vague examples, you say something specific.

> looks don't tell {censored}

You're the one who brought up the looks. So, so far I've proved that the new CP more or less looks exactly the same functions the same way, what do you have to say to that ?

> wtf the new My Computer and My Network place is... nothing appeared to mention size;)

English ? Try using paragraph breaks instead of numerous fullstops.

> trying to copy over all the stuff from this guys comp vista wouldn't let me..... at first I assumed it was cause the folders had been private in xp but when I checked it wasn't..... why it wouldn't let me copy shortcuts, pictures, and music is beyond me..... maybe you have an answer for this.....

I installed Vista on another HDD and than proceeded to copy everything across I wanted and considering how you're struggling with the new CP I'm sure your 'problem' isn't anything large.

> again I found for a computer geek enthusiast you can likely learn where everything is but is it truly worth the trouble....

And again I pointed out how a 10 year old with little prior computer experience (XP) can figure it out and I also pointed out how there really isn't any trouble.

> again believe me I did look around and found nothing;) at least not in similar locations

Well, considering how I just proved that most things are in similar locations you may want to see an optometrist.

> I don't expect things to be in the same location but possibly take some time again make a 2nd theme for putting things is a more similar locations:P.....

It's a shame things are more or less in the same location unless you can provide an example where something has drastically moved.

Aesthetically, I like Vista, Aero is nice, probably looks nicer than Tiger. I don´t like the fact that it continually grinds my Hard Drive while seemingly doing nothing. Games that run beautifully on XP on my C2D iMac, stutter under Vista. UAC is obnoxious and I disabled it completely. It sits on my HD in case I need it but my primary OS is still Tiger and I anxiously await Leopard!
