to get 10.4.9 ati kexts (or nvidia kexts) workin in 10.4.9: (short hand, full tutorial when i make it)

Backup the following kexts:

System.kext

IONetworkingFamily.kext

IO80211Family.kext

(and any other kext you need to function if you had to edit it, i.e. ATA controllers and such, not video kexts)

download apple combo update 10.4.9 from apple.com (not from software update)

install when promted for a restart, force quit installer (Apple key+option key+Esc)

now download and install the following:

Paulicats' AppleSMBIOS.kext

your kernel of choice (any will work)

install paulicats' smbios and your kernel of choice, and the backed up kexts mentioned above

now restart and your card should show as 512mb, if you have 512mb cards (that without any editing of any kext either, you still wont have QE/CI either)

now you add your natit of choice. and then restart.

if all goes right you should have dual screens and rotate for nvidia cards (altho you may need to edit geforce.kext and nvdaresman.kext and nvdanX0hal.kext also to get QE/CI, all depending on your card) *edit* only need to edit GeForce.kext to get QE/CI ;)

and for ati cards your results may vary depending on your card. you shouldnt have any problem running any X1X000 card with stock apple kexts it just a matter if you get QE/CI on editing the ati kexts.

like i said for ati cards your mileage may vary depending on the card and getting QE/CI working.

oh yea i didnt include the 10.4.4 login window so if your about this mac restarts the finder you need the 10.4.4 login window patch found on most jas disks

Thank you very much!

but i tried it and failed. (7900GS 512M 0x0292)

i updated my osx 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 by a combo update file yesterday,

then i replace system.kext, mach_kernel, paulicat's AppleSMBIOS.kext,

restart and boot loader shows Vram = 256M yet,

get in desktop and sysprofiler shows Vram =250M too.

then i put Natit.kext in and edit GeForece.kext, add my devid 0292, restart, and got a blackscreen all the same.

any wrong with what i did?

(didn't "nstall when promted for a restart, force quit installer (Apple key+option key+Esc)") is necessary?

thanks again!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

edit: i reinstalled 10.4.8 & updated to 10.4.9 according to this tutorial , but i never shows any "512M", it alway be 256M....

& i put Natit in i got a block screen...

i should have said ati cards with 512 should show as 512, nvidia cards with 512mb still need nvidiaefi.kext :)

you mean the current version NVidiaEFI.kext + 10.4.9 nv drivers can let 512M cards work?

i tried that too but with no luck.

thanks.

here my proof for 512mb ATi cards and 10.4.9 kexts: I only edited ATiRadeonX1000.kext , and added natitx1600* (new build not yet released til i can fix the opengl crashes)

Screenie:

post-14143-1173890974_thumb.jpg

*new NatitX1600 build is more based on the original natit dual versions, no edid's and anything else extra added to the info.plist

i also know theres some magical key like nvidia's <NVCAP> for ATi card to get extended monitors and monitor detection on second port (or usually the DVI port).

until we find that magical key i dunno what the future ATi extended montior feature is ;)

and if anyone can fix or help me with the opengl that would be sweet.

*edit* (forgot to show i was actually runnning 10.4.9)

hopefully _np and joe75 can help a little more on that, i have no clue of whats going on or the status with 512mb nvidia cards as im not using/devolping for one at the moment.

I'm interested in learning more and being able to mess around with .kext's "on my own". Any pointers on where I should start looking for info getting my X1300 256MB to run? The files on Diabolik's site won't work since this card has got a different device id.

Thanks in advance. :(

Final solution for me.

OK

TO get 10.4.9 properly working on my system (jas 10.4.8 sse3, 7800GT, intel d920, intel d945gntlkr mobo) this is what i did.

Backed up all my extensions and kernel(mifki).

Installed the 10.4.9 combo update from apple

did not reboot (force quit installer)

Then swapped back from my 10.4.8

The kernel

AppleSMBIOS

AppleAPIC

AppleACPIPlatform

System

I then had to add my graphics device ID to GeForce.kext

The natit dual screen i had been using v0.01 i believe left me with a blank black screen.

I installed the first version of natit instead and this worked after two reboots.

NOTE: 1) Paulicats SMBIOS without the 10.4.8 APIC and ACPI allowed me to boot but my sleep didnt work anymore.

2) Power down your computer completely after replacing natit and give it 2 boots before you decide that its not working. My system booted to black screen first time. second time and since it has booted up fine. (ive always had this issue of the occasional boot not working with natit.

3) when in single user mode typing reboot does just that. (obvious but handy)

4)my 10.4.8 extensions were backed up to a folder /backup. this vanished along with all my extensions after trying the natit installer. Im not sure but im guessing the installer/uninstaller uses a folder called backup andremoves it as part of the install/uninstall process. or else i wasnt paying attention and accidently deleted it. either way maybe backup to something named backup1048ext. i got very confused at times with all these different kexts floating about

i knew before i updated ;)

i also stated that you get rotation for nvidia cards in 1049 in one of my above posts. :P

From post#8

if all goes right you should have dual screens and rotate for nvidia cards

  • 1 month later...

Hi all!

I've been following discussions from here for a while. 1month ago I got my hands on JaS' 10.4.7 Installer DVD, put up OSX on my machine, and it was quite OK. I upgraded to 10.4.9 JaS Intel SSE3. Then I purchased a ASUS 7600GT. Then troubles begun.

I didn't had QE/CI enabled, my vidcard was not indentified. So I've installed DiaboliK's 10.4.9 Nvidia drivers. Upon reboot, I only had garbled screen with the black cursor, nothing more. Since then I tried many things, like adding device ID in nvidia.kext, but didn't help either.

If I boot in safe mode (-x) display is working OK, even in dual display mode, but without QE/CI.

What do you guys recommend for me to do next?

Here are my system specs:

ASUS P5LD2VM/C mobo, with latest bios, 2Gigs of RAM, P4 915 CPU, SB PCI 128 soundcard, 400G Seagate SATAII HDD, and another 250G Western Digital SATA, which I am running OSX of

The vidcard is a marvellous ASUS 7600GT with 256M of ram, 128 bit, dual DVI model, with SVIDEO TV out. There are NO VGA DSUB connectors.

So any help/idea would be appreciated! Thanks again.
