Lactobacillus P Posted March 16, 2007 Share Posted March 16, 2007 (edited) I guess you installed OSX 10.4.x as the only OS and now want to install Vista as a second OS. You could use disk utility to create an empty partition. You could use Arconis Disk director to do this. There are no PC utilities that I know that are able to make the OSX partition smaller to make room for Vista. You could make a backup of the OSX partition using Arconis True Image. Get yourself a bigger drive and install vista first and restore your OSX partition. Check out a guide to create a native multiboot Vista system. It's fairly easy to do it the other way around, I managed to create a triple boot system and installed Vista after I had a OSX / Windows XP multiboot system. matulike Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 I HAD to install XP after OS X to then install VIsta. The Vista DVD is really bad for creating of manipulating partitions. My perferred method is, create partitions with Acronis, install OSX on partition 1, then XP on 2, then install Acronis OS selector and get OSX and XP detected. Then put the Vista DVD in and boot from it. Install on the 3rd partition which should work now. Then reinstall OS selector (I always used the fourth Data partition to install it on). Now you will get OSX and XP, but the XP link in OS slector will take you to the Vista boot loader, which should give you the option to boot an older version of Windows too - XP. Use vistaBootPro to mess around with that. Done. And in only 4 lines ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Only thing is... how would you install OS X first then XP if you need to install XP to run Acronis? That was probably a stupid question, but I just don't know. Anyone? cbmkgd Posted May 4, 2007 Share Posted May 4, 2007 You just need a bootable cd that can create a fat32 partition and make it active, to install osx first. eg a linux livecd/livedvd, or hiren's bootcd, etc. Then install osx (on a primary active partition). Then you should be able to install winxp: it's bootable install cd shoud be able to create a new primary partition and make it active, then install on it. If it has a problem creating a new partition, just create another one and make it active with the aforementioned livecd/hiren's, etc; then install winxp. You'll then have to chose which bootloader to use: winxp's ntldr with the chain0 method, or osx's darwin' bootloader. If the later, you'll need to make the osx partition active again. In both cases, you'll need to edit the menu file (boot.ini for chain0 method, com.apple.boot.plist for darwin bootloader). Search the forum/wiki for details. cbmkgd Posted May 4, 2007 Share Posted May 4, 2007 well, firstly, maybe this should be moved to a newly created thread, since this present one was about vista after osx86. anyway... yes, you could use hiren's boot cd or gparted from livecd to prepare the osx install, then install xp, and then aoss. but if your osx isn't even installed yet, you could just install xp, then create an active primary partition for osx and install it, which will give you the nice and fast darwin bootloader to handle both. for a simple dualboot, aoss is overkill. If it calls for a new thread, after I try it out and it works, I'll post that method. Just to me it seems so much easier to do it this way. I think this has already been answered, but I know how difficult it is to browse through all the topics. I installed Vista after already installing iPC 10.5.6, but I did so on a separate drive. Just install Vista as normal (format the drive to NTFS). I use EasyBCD to dual boot. It's really simple. I also think you can just partition off a certain amount of your OS X drive and re-format to boot Vista from the same drive (also using EasyBCD), although I've not tried it myself. Just download EasyBCD to a thumbdrive and after your Vista install, run the program and add OS X to the list of bootable drives. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

To recover the osx86 bootloader after xp or vista install you will need to run these commands in a command prompt: open a command prompt by clicking start, then run... (some ppl dont know this sry) type cmd then press enter. black box with blinking cursor pops up type: diskpart press enter type: list disk press enter, you should get a list of drives in your machine type: select disk 0 press enter, its usually disk 0, which is the first disk in the machine type: list partition press enter, a list of partitions will be displayed. look for the one osx86 resides on type: select partition 0 press enter, yours may be different so use common sense here type: active press enter, you should get an output that says partition marked as active. if not, you messed up lol type: exit close the command prompt and reboot your darwin loader should be back, if not then you probably set active the wrong partition. i use this method all the time and it has never failed. --------------------------------------------------------- ok now, how to install vista AFTER osx86. this is also pretty simple, and much like the fix i just posted above, only this time we do it in osx. here we go: open the Terminal, if you dont what that is then i suggest you google it so i can conserve space here in this reply. kthxlol type: sudo -i press enter, it will prompt for password. type: fdisk -e /dev/disk0 press enter, your disk number may be different type: p press enter, yes just the letter p. you should get a list of partitions on the disk. a star will be displayed next to the currently active partition which is probably your osx86 partition. type: f 1 press enter, this will flag partition 1 as active, which is the partition i want to install vista to. change to your partition number accordingly. type: update press enter, updates machine code. not sure if necessary but i do it every time type: w press enter, yes just the letter w. it writes the changes to the boot sector of the drive type: exit press enter, will ask if a reboot is ok to write changes. answer yes or this wont work. reboot! try to install vista again and it should work. if not, you messed up try again. always works for me! now maybe we can close this thread and go on with our lives?
