OSXtasy
Anyone ever wondered why Apple overlooks this simple yet very informative/miniscule led??????
munky
I dont miss it, to be honest. Why do you need one?
jrrjrr
It can be useful to know if there is hard drive activity going on while you think your machine may be locked up instead. There are menu bar utilities that show hard drive activity, but they only help after you have finished booting up. http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/
munky
hmm i guess you could be right. my only experience with real apple hardware is with notebooks, where you can hear or feel the hdd fairly easily but i guess it would be different with an imac or something. asap18
Theres a patch for linux, I bet one could be made for OS X, where it uses the Digital Out hole as a hdd activity light.
erbic
I bet someone could finagle that... I remember when I was trying to install Vista, one of the digital audio ports was stuck shining red until I installed drivers for it. Someone just needs to figure out how to get direct access to that light, write some code to link it to HDD access, and tada.
A Nonny Moose
And why not have a registry that we can edit? And while we're at it, why can't we have the constant grinding of the hard drive like in a curtain-like OS?
Magnetic_dud
I'd like also a reset button...
OSXtasy
Oh yeah, I forgot about menu-meters, and I alredy have that installed. Anyway, I just thought it would be neat to have an activity LED. Maybe a very bright blue one, like the white power led on G5/MacPros. It would even be ok to just make the power LED flash when there is HD activity even, you know kinda like one of my DVD burners in my pc. Whe its not working its green, but when it is working, it flashes orange/green. Oh well...............
macgirl
I'd like also a reset button... What for? You can use power button as reset (kinda).
Magnetic_dud
When my g3 freezes, i have to disconnect power as the power button doesn't turn off And when an intel mac runs windows, it's a must a reset button
Paranoid Marvin
I noticed that when I installed Fedora or Suse on my Powerbook, the sleep light became a blinking hard drive light. It's annoying!! The sleep light is actually quite bright, and it is very distracting. So even if someone did develop the patch, it's not very desireable on many macs...
