Can I Move to a new HDD?

Hi everyone

I've got a working installation of OSX86 using Jas's 10.4.8 image.

I have it on an 80 GB IDE HDD drive, with a 10GB partition for OSX and the remaining 70GB for Windows Vista. The current bootloader I am using is Acronis to dual boot. I am running out of room and have not found an easy way to increase the size of the HFS+ partition.

I was thinking of purchasing and installing a SATA HDD and installing the latest OSX86 image on this and then using the Migration Assistant to transfer settings of my existing install.

1. Will this work?

2. Has anyone else successfully done this?

3. Is there any way to remove the acronis boot loader? What is the preferred boot loader?

4. Are there any issues I need to be aware of if I do this?

5. Should I just clone the disk, can I do an IDE -> SATA clone?

Hi everyone

Thanks for the responses. If I do decided to generate a disk image and "recover it" or make a clone, can I restore the image onto an entire HDD and have it recognise the extra space?

To clarify, the current OSX boot disk is on a 10GB partition, and i would like to transfer this to an 80GB hard disk drive. Will the clone recognise the extra space and make it available?

I just did what you asked about. I bought a new SATA hard drive installed it and did a fresh install of OSX. After the reboot during setup it asks if there is another disk or partition I'd like to transfer my info from. Also asks and lets you transfer your user folder(includes apps etc) . I click yes and in a few min I was up and running just like before but with way more room! I didn't install a boot loader but use systems bios to choose which drive or partition to boot from. It will vary with different motherboards. My machine I hold down the F8 key as soon as I see the first graphics and it lets me choose my DVD,floppy or a hard drive to boot from. If I wait just a bit longer to hold down the F8 key just as the first graphic fades and the screen turns black it lets me choose a partition to boot from. It would be easier if it used different keys for the disk & partition choices but after a few times I got the hang of it. Works great and no need to install any software. I'm guessing some motherboards may well use different keys. Mine is the ASUS P5L-MX .
