Worth waiting till "spring"?

Hi

Sick of PC crashing and software stalling and I've finally convinced myself to invest in a ma, 20" iMac to be precise.

I now read about the new OS being released soon and just wondered if it was worth waiting a wee while with a view to getting an iMac shipped with the new OS, being new to the Mac world I wasn't sure if machines are shipped with the latest OS when its first released??

Cheers

it all depends if you *need* the machine right now, or if you can wait. Apple currently sell the retail version of Tiger (eg for people who bought macs with Panther pre-installed) for £89, and there are rumors that Leopard will cost more.

i think they do (or used to) offer rebates if a new OS version came out within 60 days or something, but you'd have to google for details.

finally, if you do wait, there's always the chance that the prices might come down, or the specs might be improved. but then you could be holding off forever.

tough call, brother. <_>

I'm in the same boat as you, got money for a 20" imac at the end of Feb, luckily I get about £100 off as I work for a university, but I really think I should wait for Leopard/ iLife 07. I know I'll have to buy pretty soon (before I spend the money on something else <_< ) , I reckon on waiting til April...

Either get your iMac with Tiger 10.4.8 (10.4.9 will come out when Leopard does for the final Tiger update) and have iLife 06, OR wait for 10.5 and iLife 07. Hard choice. I am running 10.4.8 and iLife 05 and I am fine. I will not go to Leopard till a couple months later. Everybody has bugs, though Apple are MUCH better than Windows/Microsoft (not trying to scare you from Apple). Around 10.5.2 or something I will switch, BUT if you wait then you have to buy OS X ($129 right now) and then add iLife onto it ($79 right now). So if you wait, you will be having to add $210 at least for new stuff, or wait for the whole package.

Now if you are needing your iMac NOW, you will NOT be disappointed. I mean Leopard is great, but being new to Mac, you will be still learning for a while. Will you need iLife 07? Maybe not. Big question:What do you do with your Windows machine? This might answer if you NEED to wait.

A third option is both. You could get your iMac now, then over time in a month or so you could slowly upgrade to Leopard and then iLife. I mean you may not need to at all. It is nice to say "I run the latest and greatest" but iLife 05 is fine for me. Now Leopard is a different story, I don't know seeing as I have never ran it. This third option will get you your mac NOW and then you can ease into the upgrades you need. Most likely you will go to Leopard and wait on iLife. Still up to you.
