PC or Monitor?

Well, it seem im in a pickle. I got a summer job and have about $1,000 in the bank. I wanted to build a new machine for vista and have already bought the Ultimate Upgrade, and cant decide if I should buy the Monitor or the parts for my machine. I want to get one of those nice Dell 24 in. monitors. The main reason I want this specific one is because of the component in the back enables me to play my Xbox 360 in High def. Unfortunately, This costs $730, leaving me with hardly any money for a new machine. The machine I want to build is here: https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...ishListTitle=PC. Now I have to choose between a machine or the dell monitor. If I go with the PC, I should have enough money to buy it in march, I can get the Dell right now of need be. But if I go for the Dell, I wont have enough money to build my machine until at least June/July. What should I do? BTW, how does my machine look, should I buy some faster memory or what?

This new machine you're bidding. It costs $1,230.91 . I don't see how you can manage an monitor in it.

I were in your shoes. I would not buy, nor a new monitor nor a new PC, but would collect more money and buy myself a nice Mac Pro!

But that is just me...

believe it or not, I actually though about getting a mac Pro, but i soon learned that you cant drop any video card into it. Since I can't do that, I would see no DX 10 in my future, so I decided to build my own!

raise your savings up to $2600. And you will be grunted with a real machine MAC PRO!

I think that's WAY too much money to spend on an osx86 computer...just get a real mac. What about a 24" iMac? Even if you don't like the iMac idea, look around some more.

And your monitro... do you really need a Dell one? There are similar acers for a lot less and the same size. And acer is a great value, too.

The Dell monitor shouldn't cost you $730. Speak to anybody who regularly buys Dell products online, and you'll find that there are a ton of coupon codes and special rebates that could help you save a drastic amount of money. The 21" Dell widescreen I'm currently using cost $640 when I originally got it, but I managed to pay only $320 by waiting for a sale, using coupon codes, promotional codes, and rebates in combination. They seem to have random sales on their monitors almost every week. You just have to buy when the price hits the absolute low, then hit it with some promo codes.

Aside from that, it looks like you're trying to skip about a decade of technology. Going from a 90's CRT to the latest hi-resolution LCD monitor is a BIG difference. Just keep in mind that the monitor is almost useless if your computer isn't powerful enough to put out at least a 1680x1050 resolution while keeping smooth graphics.

You currently have enough money for a 17" iMac. If you save up only $200 more, you could get a much more powerful model though. However, don't walk into the store with exactly $1,000. You need to take taxes into account, which can make even the lowest-end model cost about $1,100.

you did throw money out of the window for vista? i would like to post nelson of the simpsons with a nice "haha!" but i dont wanna waste so much time ;-)

if you want os x, then get a mac - unless you want to wait several month (or forever) for a running leopard...

if tiger´s enough for you, nothing speaks against a hackintosh, but if you wanna spend so much money, i would not rest on tiger (all the new crazy features of iwork and ilife will need leopard, i heard ;-) )...

but...if you like vista, get one of those "vista-ready" crapboxes...

nah, iirc he already has a macbook. he wants a vista machine.

if you do still have that macbook, i'd say screw vista and get that nice monitor.

Hmm... What games are you intending on playing. If you are playing games based on the Half Life 2 engine, then stick with something like a cheap 150 dollar ATI Radeon x1650xt or Radeon x1900. I just can't believe why you are getting a really expensive video card, such as the one you showed.

Well, to clarify some things, I'm not trying to make it an OSx86 box, but I may do that in the future. I am currently on my Macbook, so I already have my OS X fix. The main reason Im buying this because my current computer is pure {censored}. It's not an either or situation either. It's just what im going to get first. In response to that coupon code comment, www.retailmenot.com has no codes for that specific monitor. The main reson im getting this PC is for gaming reasons. So im looking at playing crysis on this baby.

Just so you know what my desktop is running right now, to show you why this is a much needed upgrade,

AMD sempron overclocked to 902 Mhz

512 mb RAM

5400 rpm 40 GB HDD

Nvidia 5200 video card

XP home(!)

A crappy Gigabyte mobo (can't remember what model)

the sad part is this sounds like a 2003 machine, but i built in on Christmas of 04.

That doesn't even sound like a 2003 machine

Yuck, that is slow  It does seem older than that...

Well if you have a Macbook, and you'll be getting both the monitor and computer, get the monitor first. Mainly because you'll be able to use it with the Macbook OR your poor current machine. No use in having that new computer without the nice monitor.

Hi,

so, I am trying to get a Saphire x1650xt working in my set-up, I cannot get QE/CI. I have loaded natit as well as the x1650 agp.pkg. Sound like you got one working, yes?

I am using an Intel D945gpm motherboard, 930D cpu, saphire radeon x1650xt w/dual DVI.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I seem to be leaning toward the monitor for now, but may change my mind at anytime. can anyone recommend a better Mobo? I don't need th SLI but the price on that is so sweet. And is there a noticeable diffrence between a $600 and $400 Graphics cards?
