USB or FireWire external hard disk?

Hi,

Purpose:

I want to be able to create a seperate Mac OS X installation with Final Cut Studio on it. So I can boot up any (Intel) Mac with Alt and choose to boot from my external "Mac" (the HD).

Mac:

iMac 24" (Intel, standard version)

Experience:

I used my home made external (took the parts from a external housing) Maxtor DiamondMax 10 USB HD drive (7200 RPM PATA133 200GB). It works but it crashes when to many Apps are running at the same time. Last time it crashed completly and doesn't boot up any more.

Question:

Is it caused by the bandwith of the USB 2.0?

How can I solve it (buy a firewire HD?)?

Thanks

I think FireWire is better by far, very far. I used with My PowerBook and never had a problem, but my choices wre narrow because USB in my PB is 1.1 so very poor transfer rate.

It's a shame that PCs dont boot with FireWire Disks (at least I never known any that could).
