Kirk Ouimet
Dear Friends, Over the past few months I've designed a variety of websites for my clients, with all of my work done on a Windows-based PC. Unfortunately, the only way that I have been able to test my websites' compatibility with Safari is to use web services that take screenshots of the pages in Safari. The web screenshot method is an ineffective way to develop Mac-friendly websites. As soon as I found out that I could install Mac OS X in VMware I was ecstatic. It would be great to be able to actually run Safari and test my sites within the actual browser. Sadly, I have run into some issues after installing Mac OS X in VMware. I did a custom installation off of the JaS ISO. During the part where it installs the AMD files it said that I needed to reboot, press F*, boot with the -v and -s switches, and then type ./patcher 10.4.8.AMD.CPUID.txt. I assumed that F* meant F8, and I rebooted and typed it in. It said the command wasn't found. Here's a screen: http://www.kirkouimet.com/kirk/vmware-patcher.jpg When I try to start the OS, it gets to a certain point and hangs. Here's a screen without the -v and -s switches. http://www.kirkouimet.com/kirk/vmware-withoutswitches.jpg And with the -v and -s switches on boot: http://www.kirkouimet.com/kirk/vmware-withswitches.jpg I would really love to get this working, if you have any thoughts that may help me out, I would love to hear them. Thanks! - Kirk *** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION *** Software VMware Workstation 5.5.3.34685 JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.iso Hardware ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1.8GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX FreeBSD.vmx (VMware Configuration File) config.version = "8" virtualHW.version = "4" scsi0.present = "TRUE" scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic" memsize = "512" MemAllowAutoScaleDown = "FALSE" ide0:0.present = "TRUE" ide0:0.fileName = "FreeBSD.vmdk" ide1:0.present = "TRUE" ide1:0.fileName = "R:" ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw" floppy0.present = "FALSE" ethernet0.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.connectionType = "hostonly" ethernet0.virtualDev="e1000" usb.present = "TRUE" sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "es1371" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" displayName = "Mac OS X" guestOS = "freebsd" nvram = "FreeBSD.nvram" ide1:0.autodetect = "FALSE" paevm="true" ide0:0.redo = "" ethernet0.addressType = "generated" uuid.location = "56 4d b0 0d 45 dc 81 11-10 3c 05 12 dc b7 ae 5e" uuid.bios = "56 4d b0 0d 45 dc 81 11-10 3c 05 12 dc b7 ae 5e" ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:b7:ae:5e" ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0" tools.remindInstall = "TRUE" ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE" Edited January 30, 2007 by Kirk Ouimet
wmarsh
It would be great to be able to actually run Safari and test my sites within the actual browser. You are right, that's my major use for OS X too. Safari works well in VMware. Here is my tutorial for installation. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=35639 I have not had luck with Jas in VMware. The Tubgirl disk installs easily. Browsing the board, I think others may have gotten it to work with -v -legacy -vmware. Don't use Free-BSD as OS; Windows NT works with either Intel virtualization turned off or the -legacy bootflag. You don't need to run patcher unless you have AMD host. Its to change info.plists for AMD. I have been able to get "Other 64-bit OS" to work with -legacy bootflag; however not in 64 bit mode as -legacy keeps kernel 32 bit. asapreta
I think you are trying to patch the wrong place. The files on the first screen are the ones on the DVD. Have u made the correction partition scheme when installing the 10.4.8 over vmware? I only managed to install it (with either intel or amd patches) when I stopped ERASING the vmware virtual HD and started to PARTITION it (1 partition scheme) If you manage to boot the HD you will see a .TXT that is to be applied with the ./patcher.... Kirk Ouimet
wmarsh and asapreta: Thanks for your replies - I tried installing an older version (10.4.6 instead of 10.4.8) and it worked!
