Let's just say I had $3500 to spend on a computer (if only I did!). What do you think I should buy?:

-A Macbook Pro:

----2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

----1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 1x1GB

----120GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm

----SuperDrive 6x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

----MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display

----Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English

----Accessory Kit

Total: $2000

------or a------

-Mac Pro:

----Two 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

----2GB (4 x 512MB)

----160GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

----NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)

----Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)

----One 16x SuperDrive

----Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English

----Mac OS X - U.S. English

Total: $3119

Now, what I do on my windows computer right now includes:

3D Modeling

Website Design

2D Graphics

Standard Stuff (internet, word processing, etc)

Sometimes some audio stuff (like making songs with fruityloops and whatnot)

And listening to music

If I had the money right now, I would be leaning towards the Mac Pro, because it is more of a workstation and would be easier to use compared to a laptop. Oh, and I would need the airport for wireless internet (correct?). Also, for your information, I would select the monitor with the Mac Pro because mine is sort of damaged (a few dead pixels and whatnot).

However, if I rolled with the laptop, I could take it with me and it has the monitor built in (obviously).

Please post your suggestion! Also feel free to make some suggestions about the specs of the Mac Pro and Macbook (but please make sure to stay in the 3500 dollar price range if you do; I don't want to spend 19,000 dollars on a computer [do it, customize it to the max. That price is rediculous]). I would use this for future reference. Thanks.

3D Modeling

Mac Pro will prolly render more than twice as fast compared to the MBP and you can always buy an X1900XT and flash it to Mac edition to give you some boost in modeling. Best of all, it should cost around $200-250 if you can find one used on ebay. Don't buy memory from Apple... ever !!!

Well if you were to get the MBP, i would definitely step it up to a 2.33 ghz processor with at least to GB of ram. Its pretty likely though that the Mac Pro is going to get an update to 2x quad cores, since they pretty much cost the same.

Laptops versus workstations: it is always the same old story, regardless if they are PCs or Macs.

The only advantage of a laptop is the portability, or if you live in a really small space.

A workstation has every other advantage you can think of: you get more for your money, it easier to upgrade, it is faster, it will last you longer...

  • 4 weeks later...

ramm if it's not too late, go macbook, but wait a bit of save a bit more and go for the 'bigger' 15inch. i.e 2.33g (as opposed to 2.16g) 2g ram (iso 1gram), but most of all 256mb, whatever, on draphics (as opposed to 128 i think). i made that decision last minute and glad i did, especially if u do 3d modelling too. if u went for it, i;m sure it will be fine anyway, but that little extra will be worth it if you haven't already
