asrock 945g-dvi power supply

I had posted this in the OSX86 section, but on second thought it might be better to post in the hardware section.....

I am pondering the idea of building an osx86 machine based around the 945g-dvi with a c2d, the stock dvi add-in video board, slimline dvd burner and single sata HD. The CPU would have a stock cooler - will not be overclocking.

I am thinking of this unit as a "wannabe mac mini" as it has the dvi output which I plan to use with my projection big screen.

My main concern is selecting a power supply. I would like to find one that would be small and quiet, while using as little juice as possible. I understand the mini uses a "laptop brick" as it is basically a laptop without the keyboard and LCD.

I would love to have something I can keep on all day (in sleep mode) without running up the electric bill. How much power does a system draw while on sleep?

I was thinking of a 1U 300w power supply, as I wanted to build a compact case (was even thinking of using a pci-e riser card to lay the dvi card on it's side). Maybe something like 12x12x4 inches.

UPDATE - can anyone with the 945g-dvi setup with the add2 card measure the distance from the bottom of the motherboard to the top of the add2 card - (not including the metal securing bar - just to the top of the car istelf...) thanks!

For my listed components, does this sound reasonable? Anyone consider something small like this?

Also, has the sleep issue been solved? A search for "945g-dvi + sleep" brought up no results.

Thanks!

Yo, why don't you check out www.silentpcreview.com. They have A LOT of information for you, although their obsessiveness about low power/silent systems can get a bit overbearing. They're way anal. But it's a helpful site.

Incidentally the iMac core duo is the quietest system they have EVER tested.

300W seems overkill. the mac mini intel has a 110 Watts PSU (mac mini PPC 85 Watts).

check mini-itx.com for small enclosures & low-power PSUs (the 120W PicoPsu seems nice)
