ok here is the deal. I have mac os X installed via vmware using the actual disk, and I tried the "chain0" method, I added the line in boot.ini and added chain0.txt to my c: (root) directory, now, when I reboot my system I select max osx86 and it tells me that windows cannot start due to a missing file (hal.dll) I know something is wrong, and I cant figure it out, I have been reading the posts for several days now and I'm following the instructions.

here is my pc specs.

pentium 4 2.00 ghz

1.0 gb ram

2 hdd

1hd 40gb(primary partition, uses windows ntfs)

2nd 18.6gb hdd 2 partitions first partition is ntfs(8.2gb), 2nd partiton has mac os x installed(hfs+)10.2gb

can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

here is exactly what I get

Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<system root>\system32\hal.dll

please re-install a copy of the above file

what if I do this, since I have 2 partitions on my 2nd drive, take and make the whole drive the hfs partition, could that possibly make the problem go away? what I'm doing now is taking all my files and copying over to my C drive then I will delete my d: partition, then take the hfs partition and make it the whole drive.....in windows it recognises it as raw and in paragon partition manager it shows as unformatted...so do I need to delete both partitions on my 2nd drive and reinstall mac via vmware and try again?

any suggestions?

First, never copy another boot.ini exactly. I said yours should look something like the one I gave as an example. The idea was to look at the structure and wording to make sure things were in the right place and typed correctly, especially for the chain0 command

Making a quick Google (something you should learn how to do):

If you have NTFS partition, boot the system from the Win XP CD. From the installer press R to repair. The installer will show a list of all Windows install path. Choose the correct installed path. When asked for the username and password, enter administrator as the user name and your password. Then you will get a command prompt where you need to type-in "bootcfg /list" to show the entries in boot.ini and then give the command "bootcfg /rebuild" to repair.

Then carefully add the C:\chain0="Mac OS X" as shown in the example I linked to.
