Changing Windows drive icon in Bootcamp boot screen

I have a pair of really cool drive icons for Mac OS and Win XP. I changed the icon for my desktop Macintosh HD with the old copy/paste method. This also changed the icon on the OS boot screen when I boot with "option" pressed. Cool! .........

but: The copy/paste method won't work on my Untitled drive (bootcamp windows drive -- NTFS). It's not even recognized in candybar as a Volume.

I was able to get the icon on the desktop to change by using candybar to change the "internal drive" icon, but this didn't actually change the icon that appears during OS selection.

My question: Is it possible to change the icon for my windows drive as it appears on the OS selection boot screen? (as works with the Mac drive).

Here they are:

EDIT: well either imageshack doesn't work with a Mac or Opera or it's just not working now. If I find another hoster, I'll share em with you.

You can add a custom icon to a NTFS drive that will show up on the Mac desktop, but there is no way whatsoever to have that icon show up in the boot screen. The firmware only knows how to read FAT and HFS+, and even if it could read NTFS it doesn't grab the volume icon for BIOS-based booting anyway.

rEFIt is better only because it lets you customize the Windows icon that it will use in the boot menu. Even rEFIt won't pick up a custom icon from an NTFS volume because the same restrictions apply -- it can't read files from the NTFS volume. (But at least rEFIt actually tries to :P )

Yep, that website was very misleading. The instructions worked well for changing the mac desktop icon for my ntfs partition, but it doesn't affect the boot icon.

I'll look into rEFIt. I glanced at their page, but changing the firmware on my mac sounds a little too close to "messing everything up" just to get a cosmetic change.

Wow!

I looked into rEFIt a little more and realized it's just a boot manager, not a firmware hack. (although it IS a tool you can use to change EFI settings like a BIOS interface.)

So I went ahead and installed it. It's perfect. I love it! My boot screen is now beautifully and elegantly personalized.

Thanx for the tip!

Now I'm just hoping for the next release to include password boot protection. (to prevent unauthorized booting from removable drives)
