Powerbook 12" 1.5 with SD

I have an option to buy the following for about $900:

12" Powerbook G4 1.5

512 MB RAM

80 GB HDD

Superdrive

Brand new battery

All accessories

Warranty valid till end of Feb '07

I'm also getting the following additional stuff:

Wired mighty mouse

Original Office 2004 with the media

Norton antivirus 10 for mac

Targus carry bag

Now the thing is that I already have a Macbook and a Hackintosh. I use the Macbook as my primary machine and the Hackintosh is running OS X server, but its mainly being used as a media server without any monitor attached to it.

I intend to install Linux on the Hackintosh and use it as a full fledged file server. Also, I'm currently using the Macbook as a desktop replacement with it being hooked up to a Acer 19" widescreen monitor.

The options that I have are to either buy this powerbook and use it as my desktop replacement at home (hooking it up to my monitor) or to max out the RAM in my Macbook and buy the applecare protection plan for the same.

What makes more sense? I can't seem to decide as the powerbook looks like a good deal.

you're crazy if you buy that powerbook, IMHO.

i had a 1.33Ghz PBG4 12'', maxed out on ram (1.25gb) and I would no way go back to that after using a MacBook or MacBook Pro.

you will notice a SERIOUS boost to your MacBook by installing another 1gb stick and therefore allowing it to run in dual-channel mode. The MacBook is MUCH faster than the PB, imho.

also, buy a bigger HDD for the macbook! its a piece of {censored} to replace, so why not? 160Gb drives are becoming available.... :(

or why not sell the MacBook and put that money and your $900 towards a MacBook Pro? refurbs are pretty cheap these days... :P

@ Munky: Agreed with all of your points. But what about the powerbook as a replacement for my hackintosh.. something that I would use on a day to day basis at home, never taking it on the road with me. For portable stuff, I would still have my Macbook which would also be my main machine.

The PowerBook is a nice machine, but compared to the MacBook it's a bit slower. Maxing out the ram on your MacBook would be wiser choice.

Another reason to stay away from the Powerbook would be the warranty, if anything dies on it, it'll cost quite a bit to replace, especially the labour!

A great day to day desktop would be a refurbished mini off Apple. I just bought a used G4 mini, they're great little things. If your monitor has dual inputs you can share the screen with your MacBook, or you could get a simple KVM for the same effect.
