Safari - Text Jumbled and Looks Horrible

I am running 10.4.8 on an SSE2 machine with all the current updates including the recently available security patches and JRE. The resolution is manually set to 1280x1028.

Safari is acting really odd. Many of the pages don't display properly although the application doesn't crash. It really is unusable at this point.

It looks like it is having issues with stylesheets and layout. Google for example, all the search results are jumbled on one line. Hundreds of characters lumped together. Cannot be read. Most if not all web pages are like this.

Safari doesn't crash, it just doesn't display properly.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you WebKit.framework is corrupt. Open the Terminal and run these commands on it:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Frameworks/Webkit.framework && sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Frameworks/Webkit.framework

This should clear up your error. It would be nice, however, to see a screenshot of what it does, though.

EDIT: I forgot part of the command

I'm also experiencing this, only after installing the security update. Running 10.4.8 on the 8.4.1 kernel (as I have a Pentium M - SSE2 only). Everything is up to date according to Software Update. Firefox and Opera have no problems, but Safari jumbles text on a pages and won't let me click most links. Also, that code you posted doesn't work; it returns a message about how to use chown (as you never included what to change the owner it to - never thought my Linux terminal knowledge would come in handy on "the world's most user-friendly operating system" *snicker*). I then tried 'chown'ing it to "root" and "root:wheel" - that didn't work either.

I'd post a screenshot if I knew how to take one. What on earth is OSX's equivalent to Paint?

Edit: Thanks for updating that code but, as I suspected (being as I already tried "root:wheel"), that doesn't fix it. Any other ideas anybody?

Alright. You asked for a screenshot, so here you go. Pretty funky, eh?

I'm really liking OSX so far, but between the lack fo any accelerated drivers for SSE2 processors + nVidia graphics, iChat's stalwart refusal to work, iTunes needing to run through Rosetta so as not to uh..."run out of memory" (I do have a mere 2GB lol), and now this...well, suffice it to say Linux gives me fewer headaches. :thumbsup_anim:

Have you tried going to Safari menu -> Empty Cache and maybe Reset Safari

20-year Mac user here. Only played with Terminal for kicks until I got to Hackintosh where it has become a standard tool. It is not OSX that is the problem. It is trying to stuff it onto a PC that is the problem.

Hmm, tried clearing cache and resetting Safari. No dice. Also tried using Font Finagler to wipe the cache -again, no luck. This is puzzling - and a shame, because Safari loads about twice as fast as Firefox, which makes it great for just quickly checking a new page or something in the mornings.

And don't get me wrong - my only experience with OSX so far is about 10 minutes at an Apple Store, where it seemed pretty solid (except that the MBP it was running on was already hotter than the fires of Hell, even around the keyboard, although that's more Quanta's fault than Apple's), and now here, on my Dell I9300, where despite the buggyness and instability it's still a wonderful OS. I really wish I could afford a MacBook Pro - but they're just not economically justifiable on a student's budget (eg, ASUS A8Js vs. MacBook Pro, my recent dilemma with a predictable conclusion.)

And I find Firefox 2 (and Macfox) loads pages faster than Safari and made it my default browser a while ago.

(Macfox: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=34289 start at end and work forward for link)

Security update installed new Webkit and FontCard.app. Could be sources of problems.

Corrupt fonts could also be a problem. ( http://www.pure-mac.com/font.html )

Try changing default font from Times to something else and see if that fixes it.

Also, be sure the default encoding is set to Western ISO Latin 1

Hmm, none of that worked. I fear it might be related to the new Webkit installed by the security update.

And I have FF2, in Universal Binary, and it takes much longer to load than Safari on my machine. Macfox just wouldn't load at all - or rather, the app itself seems to load, but it can't be made to actually display any windows - similar to one of the (many) errors iChat would exhibit.

Try cleaning up some other cache files. Download Onyx - http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html

Onyx -> Cleaning

Internet -> check all except cookies and form values -> Execute

Caches -> check all -> Execute

Logs -> check all -> Execute (won't help, but these need cleaning anyway)

Misc Options -> check Temporary and Obsolete items -> Execute

Onyx -> Maintenance

Reset -> LaunchServices database -> Execute

Onyx -> Parameters

Safari tab -> Speed of Display -> fast

Misc Options -> check Enable Debug Menu

click Apply

Close Onyx

Reboot

Open Safari -> Debug menu -> Show Caches Window -> click all 4 buttons in order (top to bottom)

Try a web page and see if anything got fixed.

I'm having the same issue as lowlymarine . Odd huh?

im having the same issue too. 1.6ghz Pentium M SSE2. definitley SSE2 related. I think i might try getting the "before update" fontcard and webkit out of the install DVD and see if that doesnt fix the problem.

edit: my dashboard shows no letters in the widgets either. thats kinda disappointing.

Security update installs a lot more stuff, but those are the only 2 that I can see might affect Safari text.

I know, but Im not having issues with anything else, and those were the two apps that seemed to be causing the problem in your mind. Its really the only lead I have at this point. Ill report back in a few minutes on whether it worked or not.

reinstalling webkit.framework fixed safari.

working on fixing the Dashboard problem Im having still.

reinstalling webkit.framework fixed safari.

Should probably highlight that, then. If you have SSE2, don't use the latest Security update.

If you do use the Security update and get scrambled text in Safari, use Pacifist to extract the WebKit.framework from the 10.4.8 updater and install it into your system.

The only thing I see that might affect Dashboard is a DesktopServicePriv.framework in PrivateFrameworks

what is the dashboard problem? I didnt see anything wrong with mine? or I missed something

It could have been specific to my machine, I dont know. I was missing all the text in Dashboard.

Hi again !

I have found out how to extract the Webkit Framework from update, and I installed it, but it didn't helped. :( Then I have found on some forum topic that latest kernel version should help, after i updated the kernel file ... my system is not booting anymore becouse I forgot to backup the loginwindow.app file :)

Any tips on that problem? Or is it faster to reinstall the Tiger :)
