Well if there ever was a place to get some help, this would be it.

First off, I just picked up my PS3 today and i've been toying with it for the past few hours. I would love to try to get os x on this thing, but I need everyone's help. First off take a look at this. http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html Thats sony's site that tells you how to install another os on a ps3. Right now i'm gettin stuck on step 4 'Save the boot loader file on the recording medium.' Does anyone know where I can find the bootloader file for the ppc version of osx? I have the install disk for ppc v. os x 10.3 and 10.4.4 but I don't know where to obtain the bootloader for either of these versions.

Second off, I stumbled across this site detailing how to install os x on an xbox. http://www-static.cc.gatech.edu/~ran...c_install.html Considering the xbox and the ps3 basically have ppc chips in them i figured the process should hopefully be about the same. If someone can send me the link for a bootloader for os x (ppc version of course) we can get this show on the road. I'd love to have my $600 ps3 be my new 'mac mini' in the living room. I really only bought this thing for that reason. I've had this thing running for 4 hrs now and haven't even played the game i bought yet!! I JUST WANNA INSTALL OS X!! HELP ME OUT PEOPLE!!

LOL - this is funny - so you buy the 'rare' PS3 today, and you are only concerned about hacking an OS - why not just buy a mac ?

This is hilarious - play some f***ing games on it already .... if you only bought it for this reason alone - i recommend a good therapist - rather than a boot loader.

Wow - maybe i should return to school and get my doctoral degree in psychology and treat the obsessive nerds of this world! Sounds like a great new career opportunity

hemi, obviously i wouldn't be so interested in getting os x on my ps3 if i didn't own a mac already. wait, make that 5 macs. yea def 5. So now that we know that, do you have anything to contribute?

LMAO seems like yu have a buch of dough, start buying expensive DVCPROHD video equipment ans start filming your self and your computer adventures. Would make a good reality show.

sorry, but trying to get OSX on the PS3 is pretty pointless, at this stage anyway. drivers are few and far between, and driver development takes weeks or even months of "toil and trouble". and the major obsticle is NO-ONE has a PS3 because everyones selling them!

the only major pro of having OSX on the PS3 is because of the Cell Processor, and i hear that fedora has been having a few problems with it...

its too sketchy, dude. your best bet is either to ask back in 6 months or push for Ubuntu on the PS3.

what about virtualisation over a light base OS? perhaps a port of of Q? the processors are closely related, just needs hardware emulating to circumvent the driver issues. Bochs and PearPC are already running on the PSP and the DS, so that could be the answer.

even if it is sacrilige.

Just to clarify:

XBox (original) used a Pentium 3-based Celeron (Intel Mobile Celeron).

XBox 360 uses PPC - The CPU, named Xenon, is a custom triple-core PowerPC-based design by IBM.

PS3 uses the Cell, which has its basis in IBM's POWER architecture, which itself is the basis of PowerPC.

So, original XBox cannot (even theoretically) run Intel OS X, as it lacks SSE2, so the only option is CPU emulation - this can be done via QEmu (to run the Intel builds of OS X) or PearPC (to run the PowerPC build of OS X, as in the tutorial above).

The XBox 360 and the PS3 have highly specialised POWER-based processor archiectures, however neither of them are using a PPC chip which has ever been inside a Macintosh. By the sounds of things, the XBox 360's chip would be closer, but thats just conjecture. These machines might have a chance of running the PPC builds of Tiger (or even Panther, Jaguar or earlier), but you'd have to do a LOT of hacking to get it to work. Furthermore, since 99.99% of the 'hacking' info on this site relates to INTEL builds, you're not going to find much thats of help around here. If you manage to drum up enough interest in this idea (and someone with a decent amount of technical, low-level ability thinks its even credible), you might be better off starting up your own forum (insanely ps3?). IMHO tho, this isnt going to be doable anytime soon, and you'd have a hard time finding people able to put it together.

But if you're determined to do it, then dont lose heart, anything is possible.

If you already have 5 macs, do you really need a 6th? Just play some games on the PS3. I seriouslly wish I could dish out $600, but I need about $450 before I can come even close to getting it.

If on the off-chance that you get frustrated and feel the PS3 has no use as a gaming console, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. :(

This topic can be summarized in 1 phrase:

"XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD, seriously."

Spending $600 on a system that's already a pile of {censored}, and then asking to run an OS when the native OS has so many problems already?

Why aren't you making $1000-2000 on eBay?

Real question is why hasn't anyone taken one of the Linux distros that work on the PS3 and ran xbench yet to get us some info on how powerful this system is so that we can compare to other hardware on the market? I mean, if I were to find out that the PS3 were 6 times faster than a Mac Pro 4x 2.66 GHz system, I would go pick one up and work my ass off to get it running OS X.

In the mean time, why bother?
