Resolution:

Via VT81XX HDA AD1986a

1) Backup AppleHDA.kext and AppleAC97Family.kext:

In Terminal, type:

CODE

cd /System/Library/Extensions

sudo mkdir audio_backup

sudo mv AppleHDA.kext audio_backup/

sudo mv AppleAC97Family.kext audio_backup/

2) Edit AppleAzaliaAudio.kext:

In Terminal, type:

sudo vi AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/Info.plist

find:

<key>IOHDAudioCodecVendorID</key>

<string>0x10ec0880</string>

Change press i for edit

<string>0x10ec0880</string> -- to -- <string>0x11d41986</string>

Exit: press ESC to save and exit :wq!

In Terminal, type:

CODE

sudo vi AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAzaliaController.kext/Contents/Info.plist

find:

<key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key>

<string>0xNNNN8086</string> (where NNNN are any 4 characters)

Change press i for edit

<string>0xNNNN8086</string> -- to -- <string>0x32881106</string>

(note: for Via ADI1986a, the string is probably correct without any edit)

Exit: press ESC to save and exit :wq!

3) Clean up the system:

In Terminal, type:

CODE

sudo diskutil repairpermissions /

sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleAzaliaAudio.kext

sudo chmod -R 755 AppleAzaliaAudio.kext

cd /System/Library

sudo rm -rf Extensions.mkext Extensions.kextcache

4) Then, reboot and enjoy sound out of two channels.

I also have the AD1986A Soundchip in my Lenovo N100 Notebook. But I installed Mac OSX but I have no experience with it, so I even don't know how to find and delete the 2 files you are speaking about. I want to try to install ALC880 Azalia fix, but if I am right I have to delete the files AppleAC97Audio.kext and AppleHDA.kext and then install the ALC880 Azalia fix.

I know how to install the fix, but I don't know how to delete the files. I would be pleased if someone could tell me...

Is it to change "0x32881106" or to keep "0xNNNN8086"??

Thanks.

I just did what you wrote, but after I looked in the file again the file wasn't changed I think. If I try to change the file over the finder it says it cannot be saved after I edited it...

Is it to change "0x32881106" or to keep "0xNNNN8086"??

Thank.

Hello. I have a 1986 too, but i'm stuck with only the volume slider.

I've tried all the techniques stated in this thread, and others.

It just won't work :s I have a Asus W3J which is really similar to the A8j (the soundcard is the same Soundmax 1986). I'm running on Leopard.

Any ideas on what could go wrong?

Thanks.
