massyh
Hi all, I have recently purchased a Samsung U28E850R monitor and it's connected to my Dell 3020m computer running Mac OS High Sierra via DP to Mini DP and for some reason I can't set my screen resolution to 3840x2160 and I don't understand why!. At the moment the maximum resolution I can set my screen to, is 2560x1440 also I'm unable to change the Refresh Rate "Screenshoots" . Any ideas would be appreciated. PS: my graphic card is intel HD 4600 and it works on 3840x2160 in Windows
massyh
Thanks for getting back to me. To be honest I have never heard of it and I always thought as long as I do purchase a 4K monitor, it should be ok use. So from my understanding I won't be able to get such resolution unless I used such add-on apps? Could Clover configuration had something to do with that? Options like SMBios where you set up your iMac to 14.2 or 15.1 etc? One strange thing is that once I turn on my computer on Clover page and during the boot up "where you'll see the Apple logo" my monitors shows that the screen resolution is 3840 x 2160, However as soon as it gets to the log-in page it switches to a lower resolution of 2560 x 1440! Did you tray add-on apps like SwitchResX that support custom screen resolutions?
massyh
Yes I have been through the displays PrefPane in the setting "attached screenshot" and it's shows the Maximum Res available is as high as 2560 x 1440 to set! There is not any other resolutions available! I assume you've been through the Displays PrefPane to try and adjust the screen res but it does not work, right? You can also install Display Menu free app off the AppStore. It'll give you a little Finder bar's icon to set screen res and frequency amongst those offered by default by OS X/macOS. massyh
Great! I'll try them and will let you know. Thanks for help. Other than SwitchResX, you may also try latest Lilu + CoreDisplayFixup kexts. https://github.com/vit9696/Lilu/releases https://github.com/PMheart/CoreDisplayFixup/releases You may even have to combine them with the app... Morning, So I have tried everything and yet unsuccessful. I added the desire Res to SwitchResX and after saving and reboot, in the Custom Res tab>Status it shows "Not activated - invalid?" any ideas? massyh
All I can suggest is to try a different frequency. I have tried and so far so good and I could finally get as High as 2560x1920. Will try different frequency. Thanks anyway.
vandroiy2012
Intel HD 4600 doesn't have native 4K resolution support in macOS. You have to try Lilu.kext + CoreDisplayFixup.kext in EFI/Clover/Kexts/Other it will enable 2K/4K resolutions on non-iris Intel HD Graphics. https://github.com/vit9696/Lilu/releases https://github.com/PMheart/CoreDisplayFixup/releases

I have also used kext utilities to install them in S/L/E yet no difference. I wonder if there is anything to be set on Clover config file? And is there any link to download the latest kext files for intel HD 4600, latest PCID or related kext files?

massyh
Are you sure you've installed the kexts properly. Do not trust any of those kext utilities which tend to be old and inappropriate for recent macOS versions. To install and cache those 2 x kexts, you can: 1) copy them to /L/E 2) repair permissions 3) rebuild your cache You can manually do 2) and 3) from Terminal with the following usual commands: sudo chmod -Rf 755 /L*/E* sudo chown -Rf 0:0 /L*/E* sudo touch -f /L*/E* sudo kextcache -Boot -U / Thank you! I'll try this, just one thing confusing me and is that should I copy them to S/L/E or just L/E?
TrustAugustus
Are you using HDMI or DP? Also, what is your clover profile? Until recently Macs did not support 4k over hdmi
massyh
Are you using HDMI or DP? Also, what is your clover profile? Until recently Macs did not support 4k over hdmi I'm using DP port. Might be something wrong in my Clover configuration! As "Herve" suggested, I've installed Lilu.kext + CoreDisplayFixup.kext and with them being installed properly and also SwitchResX app, I've finally added a few Custom Res "attached Screenshot" yet I couldn't add any Res near 4K as you can see the in the screenshot, 4K isn't activated. massyh
In either/or but not in both at the same time; don't duplicate cached kexts! The advantage of /L/E is that it's really meant for add-on kexts and it's ignored if you boot without cache, unlike /S/L/E. It's always been recommended to keep /S/L/E fully vanilla, unless an add-on kext can only be loaded fromthere (eg: patched AppleHDA). Thanks for your help! I have tried many things and I have managed to add many Custom Res but couldn't get as better as screenshot above. I think as one of the member's posted earlier, Intel HD 4600 doesn't have native 4K resolution support in macOS. Maybe that's why I'm unable to set 4K Res or its something really wrong in my Clover configuration.
